THOSE VIEWS!!

The location of the Grandhotel Giessbach is without doubt one of the great locations any historic Belle Epoque era hotels has ever been placed in. Simultaneously overlooking the marvellous Brienzsee and Giessbach Falls as well as surrounded by forest with magnificent Swiss Alps views, the hotel has literally all the natural spectacular views that you can hope for.
However, this is where it gets a bit complicated.
Getting to the hotel is something of a quest, with narrow roads and a gate to get through. Once in there is car parking (self parking). There is no one to greet you. You will walk up a flight of stairs before you get to the front door where you will again let yourself in. Your eyes are greeted by a kaleidoscope of colour and Belle Epoque period details.
The front reception desk is a let down, but it's not a deal breaker. They will fetch your luggage for you from your car, but when it's time to leave, you are on your own.
We got to our room and our first thoughts and feelings were...underwhelming. The bathroom looks recently updated and is good. The room desperately need renovation. There is no sugar coating it,
The public areas of the hotel are quite spectacular given the period details still present. The outdoor terrace restaurant is killer with all those magnificent views. The prices are vicious, as they know:
1/ You are far from external restaurants and are thus a captive audience.
and...
2/ The spectacular views are a massive draw card that cannot be gotten anywhere else.
We ate there both evenings in the blazing afternoon sun. Naum was extremely personable and a pleasure to engage with.
The breakfast experience is no less spectacular being on the balcony looking straight at the waterfall. What breakfast lacked in quality and choices with subpar coffee, it more than made up for with that spectacular waterfall!
Our two nights were memorable, but there is nothing that would compel us to stay again a massive renovation takes place. The hotel owners are presently cruising off the spectacular scenery all around it and are content to charge 5 Star rates yet deliver something that is not befitting the natural advantages it has bestowed upon it.

Incredibly elegant!

The location, the hotel, the service, and the food definitely deserve 5 stars.
The story of Franz Weber was the reason for our visit.

Unique.

We stayed for 3 nights at this hotel. The breakfast and restaurants are excellent there. The staff is so caring and warm. I was captivated by this place; I plan to return. Unique experience; everything was perfect, and I am already nostalgic for this experience. Thank you for everything.

Time travel to a 1940s lakeside paradise!

An extraordinary hotel, without question the most special place to stay in the Interlaken area. We spent only two nights but wished we could move in! Both the service and ambience are out of a bygone age of genuine class and an appreciation for all the fine little details.
The building and surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained and tastefully modernized, yet the floorboards of the common areas creak just as they should! Even the furniture basically functions as one of the greatest operating antique collections I've ever seen.
Do understand that the hotel is not easily accessible. We were graciously picked-up from the train station in Brienz and taken up a very narrow road clinging to the cliffside. Otherwise the only other way of reaching the property is by boat from any of the towns on Lake Brienz, and then taking the historic funicular, which is a charming little two-minute shuttle up from the dock (you can also hike up the trail). You must check the schedules for both the boats and the funicular however, and the last funicular ascent is just before 18:00, so you are basically forced to spend your evening on the hotel property, which the staff ensures is as magical as possible nevertheless.
There are two hotel restaurants. We ate at both and personally found "Elisa" on the terrace to be the far superior choice, with all locally sourced ingredients and a very pleasantly surprising all-Swiss wine list. The other restaurant, "Les Cascades," was good but nothing special. The included breakfast buffet is enormous and all extremely high-quality however, especially the baked goods.
The setting is the real point of it all though, and unforgettably stunning. Hiking trails lead every-which-way from the property as well, so it's extremely easy to enjoy Swiss nature without going into any of the towns. I'd recommend hiking up alongside the amazingly powerful waterfall, though it is a steep climb! The hotel also provides a pamphlet that guarantees unlimited free usage of all the boats, the cogwheel steam train in Brienz, and admission to the Ballenberg Museum.
Please do stay here if you can –– it's something special.
