Great value for money, lots of flair
I was at the hotel for four days and would prefer to give it 3.5 points. Three points because the room needed a refresh, it smelled foul every now and then, also in the hallways, in the bathroom a tub that is not easy to climb into with a freshly operated knee, faucets that literally never offered the desired temperature, always too warm, too hot, many insects in the room, probably from the huge tree in front of my bathroom, and without air conditioning it was simply too hot on these hot days.
I would give five stars for the beach area and the varied breakfast and dinner, even more for the excellent organization of the festival evening, four for the service and the often insufficient information for new arrivals.
Overall, I recommend this hotel to people who appreciate the flair of the Belle Epoque and who also want to get their money's worth.
Anyone who wants modernity and every comfort should go elsewhere.

Insufficient
The location is fantastic and the infrastructure is okay - the service quality is extraordinarily poor. I have rarely felt so unwelcome as a guest. And the reaction to the feedback shows that they are not interested in further development. I cannot recommend the hotel in any way.

Top location for a festival visit, with a BUT
This is how I imagined Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. Fading glamour. An outdoor area on the shores of Lake Constance that one would like to place at an Italian lake XY. Huge old trees in a large park: Grand and unrivaled.
The bags that the management provided for the festival visitors were generously and creatively packed.
Cuisine perfect! Room (balcony/lake view) acceptable and fitting for the flair of the hotel.
Sauna was locked!
When other hotel guests also asked, the response was "we have enough sauna outside"; at outside temperatures of 30°, that should still be decided by the guest and not the caretaker.
Service works well for the 3 meals. At coffee time, we were asked to leave our seat because there was no service there. At our assigned seat, we managed to place an order, then the staff changed and instead of our order, a service employee came who shooed us away again with the justification that the table was now being set for dinner (it was 4 PM).
It's just the little things that can spoil what is otherwise a very nice stay.

The old lady!
Location = top. View = top. Beach area (free for hotel guests) = beautifully historic!
The old lady is unfortunately also an old lady. Some things have remained stuck in their time. We are aware that such a building consumes vast sums of money. But to attract and retain the clientele of the next younger generation (measured against the current guest structure) for the next 20 years, a structural change is truly needed. The hotel was very well attended by guests of the "Bregenz Festival," which is certainly a draw. But one should not rely on that and rest on one's laurels. The competition does not sleep. Unfortunately, many guests who booked the hotel today will no longer be there or be able to be there. Therefore, the standard common today must be tailored to the over-50s/60s. Tradition or not.

A grand hotel with soul and genuine warmth—for everyone who still knows how to appreciate style!
As long-time regular guests who stop by Hotel Bad Schachen for two weeks every summer, we feel compelled to stand up for this wonderful establishment after reading some recent reviews. Anyone looking for soulless, ultra-modern luxury that has been polished to the extreme is simply in the wrong place. But those who are looking for genuine, lived hospitality, history, and style will feel at home here from the very first moment—just like we do.
Bad Schachen has been run as a family business by the Schielin family for generations, and you can feel this personal touch in every corner. Where else today are you still cared for so warmly, almost regally? The fact that my birthday on July 25 is remembered and a handwritten congratulatory card from the Schielin family is on the breakfast table is just one of many examples of the warmth that distinguishes this establishment.
Yes, the hotel is historic. And yes, the rooms do not have air conditioning. But honestly: Who needs that on the few hot days of the year when you can open the terrace doors wide at night and sleep soundly in absolute, indescribable peace with a wonderful, natural lake breeze? The bathrooms also function perfectly and without any odors—despite the age of the building.
Anyone who walks through the magnificent hallways, the foyer, or the Belle Époque hall and does not appreciate the fantastic mid-century furniture and the antique paintings simply lacks an eye for the extraordinary. The location and cuisine are beyond any doubt anyway.
When service is criticized here, in our opinion, it is often due to the psychology of some guests. Those who arrive with excessive demands and do not understand the charm of a historic building unfortunately often take their frustration out on the staff at the front. We, in any case, experience the entire team year after year as extremely attentive, professional, and warm.
After we took a break last year (2025), we were anxious even from afar about how the team mastered the extremely difficult, rainy summer at Lake Constance. That shows how much this hotel and the people behind it mean to us.
For us, there is no more beautiful place on Lake Constance. Thanks to the Schielin family and the entire team – we are already looking forward to the next summer with you!
