Aarunya Resort is a true gem. From start to finish, our stay was pure magic, made extraordinary by the world-class team.
Check-in was seamless thanks to Dulan, the Front Office Manager, who warm-heartedly welcomed us and handled all our queries with patience and great detail.
A massive shoutout to Namal and the butler team—their attention to detail and service were exceptional throughout our entire stay. They made sure we were completely taken care of at every moment. To top it off, the culinary experience was outstanding; the food was exquisite, and the cocktails were crafted to perfection.
For relaxation, Dulip at the spa delivered a truly wonderful experience. The rooms were spotless, comfortable, and beautifully maintained.

Amazing place to stay. Tucked into the tea plantation with amazing views of the Knuckles. Nila looked after us incredibly well. Definitely do the nature walk - fascinating.

We nicknamed it 'Heaven Hotel' before we got there, and it really was!
I'm giving the overall experience a 4 out of 5 for reasons I will explain below. If I had the option, it would be 4.7 out of 5.
Read on.....
In a past career I was lucky enough to travel to a lot of lovely places and visit a handful of genuinely unique hotels (think Six Senses Laamu, Jade Mountain St Lucia, Sanctuary Lodge Machu Picchu), and Aarunya Nature Resort definitely measures up.
- Stunning, central location
- Incredible views (with personal plunge pool) from every room - we had nicknamed the hotel 'Heaven Hotel' when we booked.
- In-room facilities as you would expect (getting old now so I really appreciate a pillow menu!)
- 'Nothing is too much trouble' butler service - including calling for 'the buggy' to take us from the room to the main pool/restaurant when we were feeling lazy (the hotel is set within a steep hill)
- 'All Inclusive' really means All Inclusive
- Personal service without being intrusive
- Really good and varied food
- Boutique sized such that we really felt we had the place to ourselves, with service levels to match
- A vision from the owners you can really buy in to and can see that the hotel really strives for
Now that I've changed careers, luxury stays like this are no longer the norm so my friend and I only had 2 nights booked so that we could spend a full day celebrating my significant birthday in true style and relaxation.
Overall, the hotel, its staff, and the facilities didn't disappoint.
A particular mega-win:
The friend I was travelling with is gluten and dairy intolerant. We know this makes all sorts of things tricky. But the hotel took the time to make (from scratch) gluten-free dough so that she could have a (really lovely) chicken and veg wrap for lunch. The tour company we booked with (see my other reviews) kindly arranged for the hotel to make a gluten AND dairy-free cake for my birthday celebration (which the hotel had already laid out a special table for). It was genuinely one of the nicest cakes I have ever had and it made me so happy to be able to share a dessert with a loved-one.
A compromise we completely understood ahead of time:
All the rooms offer 4-poster beds - the rooms can't be twinned. Not 100% ideal for my friend and I, but completely understandable for this type of hotel. We knew that going in and were happy to make this compromise for 'Heaven Hotel'.
A big loss:
We had booked (and paid for) particular spa treatments in advance of our stay (at, I must say, incredibly reasonable prices - especially in comparison to other hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka). Upon arrival we were advised that the spa area was under redevelopment so our treatments would be delivered in our room. Fine in theory.
In reality, as it turned out, the specific treatments we had requested (which included the likes of body scrubs) weren't going to be feasible in-room so what we ended up with was very-nice-but-not-at-all-what-we-booked massages. Now, no disrespect to the beauty therapists, they did a great job at adapting to the circumstances and the massages themselves were lovely, but what we expected versus what we got was sub-par to say the least. And that's before the fact that our treatments were booked for the same time (making sense for 2 friends (as opposed to a couple) expecting separate treatment rooms, but pretty weird when in the same bedroom space). If my friend hadn't thought to put on your average spa music, it would have been awkward AF.
We addressed this at checkout and the hotel made a very generous (more than we were expecting) refund which is why I still rate the overall experience highly.
Nonetheless, a far better (and much more true to the luxury ethos) approach would have been to say to us upon arrival that "We're very sorry, we've had to undertake essential works to the spa, as such, the treatments you requested aren't available, instead, please choose from this list of treatments we feel we can deliver to the standard you would expect in-room, with a variety of times to choose from so that you don't have to share the space".
I appreciate that this is quite a unique/one-off situation, so it doesn't detract in any way from my recommendation, nor willingness to stay another time - particularly as the issue was compensated appropriately with no fuss. But it does feel worth highlighting within the context of a review.
All in all, we nicknamed it 'Heaven Hotel' before we got there, and it really was.
Nothing could beat the setting, the views, the food and the service levels.
They just need to think more 'luxury' when it comes to offering solutions to guests where bumps in the road/changes to the norm happen.

Kandy Hotel - awesome location
This boutique hotel lived up to its name! It's on the outskirts of Kandy but 100% worth staying here.
This was our 1st hotel on our first visit to Sri Lanka (celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary!).
The staff were awesome and the chef really made our trip... from super breakfasts to our fabulous meals at dinner... just so tasty and wow ( and these are just part of the set menus we had on half board basis).
The staff are all so attentive, polite & super friendly and nothing is ever too much!
The villa we stayed in had pretty much all you could want, from a 4 poster bed ( equipped with a mosquito net... not that it was needed) fridge, rain forest shower, with added bonus of a plunge pool and jacuzzi!!
We got a great deal which included 1 hour free drinks (daily), 1 hour complimenrary massage, 15 min head massage & yoga sessions (daily - but didn't get time for this!).
The Hotel grounds are so well kept by the team and the views are incredible... what a way to start our holiday... will definitely visit again.

Heaven in the hills.
I have no words for how beautiful this place is. Outstanding service, excellent food. The chef went above and beyond for dietary requirements. The views are incredible and it was so quiet and peaceful. It is all very steep paths etc. but the staff are happy to move you around on the zippy golf buggy. Could not have asked for a better birthday experience for my friend. The spa was undergoing renovation but they were able to work around it.
