Great experience

The Desert Camp (1 night) is a very beautiful experience in the LOMPOUL desert. It was as part of an organized tour.
Sublime place with camel ride, these are typical tents, fairly low canvas with mosquito net, Shower and toilets with open roof.
Meals are served under a large common tent, we were able to share our meals with locals (couscous) and the few tourists present, we loved it and ended with a Senegalese evening around the fire with drums.
Thank you also to our guide Abdourahmane Diagne for his shared moments and his kindness. A TOP guide!!

Mediocre, a little dilapidated and now closed (this probably explains that)

I spent the night of November 22, 2023 in this camp, during a tour organized by Intermèdes. I occupied tent 15.
Although the welcome is pleasant, the place is an old canvas camp that is quite degraded and visibly lacking in maintenance.
The establishment is going to be evicted to make way for a zircon mine, and so we understand that the owners are no longer making any effort.
The tent I occupied is large but has a very low ceiling (you can't stand up), with 3 small beds, no pillowcases, no electricity, nothing. It's old-fashioned. You can recharge your devices at the bar (if it's not too crowded, and the wifi, which is sluggish, is only available from 5 to 8 p.m.
The toilet area is in the open air, if it is private, there is no privacy because it is close to its neighbors. A sink, a toilet, a shower area without hot water. No soap or shampoo.
No drinking water either, you have to pay for it.
In the evening the noise from the generator is annoying. The dinner is okay, nothing more, the breakfast is frugal.
It is very far from certain memories of nights in the desert (here it is not a desert but dunes planted with eucalyptus trees to prevent erosion). It's more folkloric than authentic.
If the owners decide to rebuild elsewhere, I hope they will meet the standards of the desert camps that can be found almost everywhere on the continent.

A dream night

☀️ Idyllic camp given the context and location in the heart of the Lompoul desert! The camp is well supervised but allows for easy walks in the surrounding dunes. The tents are relatively well spaced. Good wifi connection but only available between 7 and 9 p.m.
The tent is pretty and the bedding is good. Don't hesitate to take a few layers to face the cold in the early hours of the night. Each tent includes private open-air toilets.
Very good couscous and presence of a bar.
Pleasant staff! Superb musical and dancing entertainment around a campfire to end the evening!

Good Experience but important to get the basics right!!

My wife and myself lived in Senegal (Dakar) in the early/mid 80s and are currently paying our first return visit since then.
This has taken the form of a private tour in a 4 x 4 vehicle (just as well as the recent start of the rainy season has resulted in extensive flooding across the country) and on Sunday we spent the night at the Camp du Desert at Lompoul. This is well established (opened in 2004) and well placed for receiving and looking after visitors.
Against this background, it was disappointing to find some basics (toilet paper, drinking water etc) missing from our tent. In addition, neither of the two lights (initially we could only find the outside one!) were working and it was clear that the tent hadn’t had a good clean (paper napkin under one the beds) for a while!
It also didn’t help that we switched our camel ride from the following morning to that evening and - not helped by a totally disinterested (on his phone for most the outing) camel ride manager and the sudden arrival of 3 quad bikes which were clearly not to the camels liking!) that didn’t go at all well!
On a more positive note both the breakfast and dinner (one recommendation is not to sit at the table with the best lighting as this attracts swarms of insects!) both went well. The bed was also comfortable with only one pillow but a most effective mosquito net. We skipped the post dinner musical entertainment as the campfire was a little way away and without a torch (anyone visiting should be advised to bring one!) it’s difficult to navigate one’s way around the camp.
All in all, a good experience but not one that I personally will be repeating any time soon!
