Casa Thea felt like home

I stayed at Casa Thea for four nights at the beginning of October. I was a single woman traveling alone. The road between Iliada and Socolari is VERY bad, so be prepared for that. Socolari and it’s and neighboring towns are very basic, without any shops or farmacies, so if you need anything stock up in Oravita. (In Oravita, there is a lidl, penny market, Pepco and others)
I HIGHLY recommended Cheile Nerei in the fall, the leaves are lovely and temperatures are pleasant for hiking. During my stay, I had lovely weather.
Casa Thea is very close proximity to Podul Bei which is the access point for La Tunele, Ochiul Bei, And Cascada Beusnita. The road between Casa Thea and Podul Bei is very good!
At Oravita, I was warmly greeted by Danny who lives at the property and I was shown the Vaioaga room, I found the room to be very very comfortable. The sheets and towels smelled particularly lovely. I was delighted to have full size towels and large hand towels. It was great to actually be able to wrap myself in a towel after a day of hiking. I also found the bed to be comfortable. The room had several lamps and shutters on the window. The shutters allowed me to sleep late in the morning, the first morning, I almost missed breakfast that ended at 10:00!
One COULD BE negative for my room is that the WiFi did not work in my room. However, since I was having a relaxing “get away from it all” this worked quite well for me. The WiFi works perfectly in the large common living room and in the restaurant.
Speaking of the restaurant, the breakfast is a “peasant breakfast” (meat, cheese, eggs) and very large. I had plenty to eat before a full day of hiking. The breakfast is complimented by homemade jelly. Also, they always brought me a pot of tea even though I never drank it once. Apparently it is very healthy.
The restaurant is open for dinner from 19:00-21:00. I found the food to be very good. I especially like the Gulash and the ciolan. I ordered in the morning what I would be eating that night, it made it easier on the staff. Some of the other reviews mention the prices are a little high. I did not find the prices to be high in relationship to Cluj. I have included the menu for your review. I will say, I would enjoy this restaurant even if the prices were high, it is a small price to pay to not have to travel to Oravita for dinner or groceries.
This area of the country is still in need of much development, infrastructure is lacking in many ways. At times, it can be hard to find information about the national park and trails. However, they are starting to make the park more accessible. I have included a hand drawn map that a park ranger gave me, I hope that it will help you on your own adventure.
There are four animals that call Casa Thea home, a fat yellow lab named Bella, a white cat, a black cat and a little dog that sleeps all the time. I enjoy animals and I enjoyed their company, however, if you have animal allergies, you may need to be aware of this.
Speaking of animals, the stray dog problem is evident in this region. Be prepared to encounter stray dogs in groups. I didn’t bother them and they didn’t bother me when hiking, but some of the other guests said that they were bothered when cycling.
I found Casa Thea to be a gem in this community. The lovely people who run it felt like family. They were kind and welcoming. While they did not speak English, my Romanian is “Ok” (I live in Cluj) and we managed just fine.
Do not approach this area as some kind of resort. This area is perfect for hikers and adventurers and Casa Thea is the perfect resting place at the end of your day.

Very disappointing

Cons: uncomfortable beds, lack of window nets (there were mosquitos), poor food, poor wifi, lack of infrastructure, strain dogs.
Even though the landscape is beautiful it is not worth booking this property.
The prices of this property are too high for what it offers.

Very nice property

We stayed at Casa Thea for 2 nights while hiking in the Cheile Nerei National Park.
The property is beautifully renovated, the room was nice and comfortable, the food very good. Marina and the rest of the crew were very friendly. Such a little jewel!

A place that promises but does not deliver

We found the place recommended by a couple of bloggings and decide to book it for a whole week as we planned to explore the area. We were three families with kids looking for nice place and relaxation.
The house is very nice renovated, we loved it and its yard, but staying for one week there we faced the minuses. Great garden, but, except the uncomfortable metal table chairs and two old style wood bench, there was nothing comfy to seat and enjoy a book or resting. To sit on the grass was also not possible because of the animals hair loss or poop.
At the comfort aspect we had to deal as well with so many mosquitos, when dining or in the rooms. The windows had no net whatsoever, the nights were so hot but we just couldn’t open the windows. The air conditioning did part of the job, but some backpain appeared. One apartment has a whole glass wall, though no blinds, so after a whole sunny day it felt like a sauna. The family from the triple room had most uncomfortable beds, three single beds btw. Our apartment was large, bit staying for one week a cupboard or something for cloths would have been helpful.
There are some other minor minuses, but that would make the review too long.
The food was ok, from the region, but nothing spectacular.
What we didn’t like most was the host attitude. They had no wines, except some local red wine we didn’t like and which was outrageously expensive for what it was. We are wine lovers, we said we want some wines, they promised they will procure which they didn’t. We tried to buy ourselves our wine, they forbid us to have it. The beer offer was also very poor, so from the point of having a nive dinner paired with wine or cooled with beer, we were more than dissapointed.
The place could be so nice and looked for if there was a bit of client focus and orientation. So, for one or two nights stopover maybe it’s ok, when you stay a whole week you’d expect more attention and care.

Very nice restored old house

A very nice restored old house. Good location for different kind of daily trips in the neighborhood. The room are clean and cozy, the stuff is very kind and helpful. The food was very tasty. The only negative aspects are the WiFi is not accessible inside the rooms because the walls are very wide( you can access the internet outside on the terrace) and the roads in the are are very poor.
