A Pleasant Five‑Day Break at Daish’s Hotel
My wife and I, both senior citizens, booked a five-day break at Daish’s Hotel through Daish’s Holidays after receiving an email offering a £400 discount. The deal included coach travel from Leicester, a twin room on a half board basis, and evening entertainment—all for a total of £398 for the two of us. A genuine bargain.
We’ve stayed with Daish’s several times before, so we knew what to expect: comfortable coach travel, clean and perfectly acceptable accommodation, decent entertainment, reasonable meals, and friendly staff. That’s exactly what we received. Here’s our full review.
Coach Journey
Our journey didn’t start well. From the moment we left St Margaret’s Bus Station, there was a constant squeaking noise coming from the superstructure above our seats. After failing to identify the cause, I asked the driver at one of the stops if we could move, and he confirmed we could relocate to any free seats. Even after moving to the back of the coach, the noise persisted.
Fortunately, we were cross loaded onto another coach in the West Midlands, and the replacement vehicle was blissfully squeak free. The remainder of the journey—and the return trip from Torquay—was smooth and comfortable.
I would strongly advise Daish’s to investigate the noise on the original coach. Four hours under that squeak would have been unbearable. We did report it to the driver, so hopefully it will be addressed.
Arrival
Arrival was well organised, as always with Daish’s. Our luggage was quickly unloaded and taken to Reception, and we were soon given our room keys. I chose to take our cases to the room myself, though they would have been delivered if we preferred.
One thing Daish’s does well is the dual number key system: one number for your room and one for your dining table. It makes finding your place at meals very straightforward. In our case, we had to walk through the restaurant to reach our room, so we spotted our table immediately.
Rooms
Finding the room was a challenge—the hotel is a maze, and despite Reception’s directions, we took several wrong turns before locating it. The room itself was spacious, though the view overlooked the rear car park. This didn’t bother us, as we didn’t plan to spend much time indoors.
Décor was acceptable and in line with what we expect from Daish’s: clean, functional, and in need of a little TLC. When you’ve paid so little for five days on the English Riviera, you take it in your stride.
We requested a fan and hairdryer from Reception, as these aren’t provided as standard. The beds were comfortable, the bedding good quality, and we slept well throughout our stay—apart from the final night, when children in the room above ran around late into the evening.
This hotel is dog friendly and had a number of children staying. Most were well behaved, though a few were very energetic.
The en suite was small but usable, with the sink located in the main room, which helped with space. Towels were decent, and we appreciated the generous supply of tea and coffee—something even higher rated hotels often fail to replenish. The TV was a good size with a clear picture.
Overall, the room served as a pleasant base for our five day stay.
Housekeeping
Housekeeping kept both our room and the public areas immaculate throughout our stay.
However, I must mention a recurring issue we’ve seen at all Daish’s hotels: on departure day, clean bedding and towels are placed directly on the corridor carpets outside rooms. This practice needs to stop. Guests walk those carpets with outdoor shoes, and placing fresh linen on them is unhygienic and unacceptable.
WiFi
The WiFi was extremely poor throughout the hotel. I ended up using my Lebara mobile data on 4G. Normally I test and record WiFi speeds in my reviews, but this offering wasn’t even worth measuring.
Dining
Your dining table is pre allocated and printed on your room key. It also serves as your seating for the evening entertainment. Ours offered a good view of the stage, though guests can move if other tables become free.
Breakfast was fine, but dinner was disappointing compared to other Daish’s hotels. My quiche starter was inedible, and my wife couldn’t eat one of hers due to the taste. Some menu combinations were odd—such as gammon steak topped with sweet and sour sauce.
We never went hungry, but the evening meals simply weren’t up to the usual Daish’s standard.
Entertainment
The entertainment was excellent—some of the best we’ve experienced at any Daish’s hotel, and better than many hotels we’ve visited elsewhere. The magician was superb, and all the singers were enjoyable. We stayed in the hotel every evening and thoroughly appreciated the programme.
Staff
The staff were consistently friendly, cheerful, and professional. A real credit to Daish’s.
Location
The hotel sits at the top of “Cardiac Hill,” and the name is well deserved—it is extremely steep and not advisable to walk up. Walking down to the harbour is pleasant, and from there you can catch the ferry to Brixham, which makes for a lovely day out.
To return to the hotel, we used the number 62 midi bus, which drops you right at the front door. It’s best to board at the stop opposite Edinburgh Woollen Mill, as the bus has limited space and may be full by the time it reaches Cary Parade.
Summary
We thoroughly enjoyed our five-day break and would happily stay again. Having visited both Daish’s hotels in Torquay, we agreed that we preferred this one. It’s closer to town, feels more friendly and personal, and has a better overall atmosphere than Abbey Lawn. A very pleasant place to stay.

We are sorry that your outward journey was disrupted by the persistent squeaking noise on the first coach. We appreciate you bringing this to the driver's attention.
Thank you also for your feedback regarding the room and housekeeping. We are pleased to hear that you found your room clean and comfortable, that you slept well for the majority of your stay, and that our housekeeping team kept both your room and the public areas well maintained. We have noted your concerns regarding clean linen being placed on corridor carpets and appreciate you raising this with us.
We are sorry that you experienced such poor Wi-Fi during your stay and that some of your evening meals did not meet the standard you have come to expect from us. We appreciate your honest comments regarding the meals and your specific feedback will be shared with the hotel team. We are pleased, however, that you never went hungry and that you enjoyed the breakfast and other aspects of your dining experience.
It is wonderful to hear such positive comments about our entertainment programme. Your kind words regarding our staff are also greatly appreciated.
