Pack your thermals and don't expect privacy
After arriving, following more than eight hours on the road, we were met by a locked hotel and no communication.
Thankfully the pub next door was open and our key had been left with them (which we discovered after checking with multiple people in the pub). A lot of stress could have been avoided if we had been advised accordingly. Having finally got the key, we went up to our room.
Our first surprise was that the shower was in the bedroom. Having booked the family room for two adults and a 15-year old child, we found that far from ideal.
The next thing we faced was that the room was absolutely freezing. The thermostat said it was 10°. The window in the toilet (which thankfully did have its own room) was wide open, and the window in the bedroom/shower room was also open.
The radiator was ice cold. This, when the temperature outside was below freezing - hardly the warm welcome we needed after an arduous journey.
I turned the set temperature on the thermostat up, and shut the windows.
I checked the radiator, but couldn't see any numbers, so assumed it was on.
My daughter, who has congenital heart disease, had to sleep in a jumper, fleecy tracksuit bottoms and her winter coat as it was so cold in the bedroom. In the morning her hand, that had fallen put from under the covers, was numb.
At 6am the next morning, the room was still freezing. I turned the dial on the radiator, but it made no difference.
The room simply had no heating, with the exception of the towel rail in the toilet.
We spent a second night dressed in coats, gloves and hats, attempting to stay warm enough in a freezing cold room. My daughter woke up unwell this morning.
What a shame, as clearly effort has been put into the venue.
Unfortunately, the poor communication, shower with no possible privacy (other than people sittong in the toilet so others can shower) and complete lack of any heating in the middle of winter, make it entirely impossible for me to recommend the Unicorn Hotel.
