A good central place to stay
My first visit to Chesterfield since the 1970’s. I chose to stay in the centre and picked a place with good feedback from others. This is a great central place to stay near the twisted spire, although you can’t see much of it from the Erewash bedroom, it is a hallmark of area. Arrived later than expected because of traffic congestion on route, M25 and M1. Was greeted by the staff behind the bar as this is a restaurant with rooms. The place has a secure car park at the rear of the building. I was shown to my room up a narrow staircase and told about the arrangements for using the doors using the key and key fob. Having checked in, went to the bar and got a beer and ordered a main course. Being a Saturday evening the eating area was particularly busy, with just one table available and reserved in advance for me. The steak and ale pie with chips and vegetables was really tasty, washed down with the beer. At the rear of the bar is an enclosed garden area with picnic tables and other tables and chairs. This was also busy. Being a solo traveller I went to bed early and had a chance to look at the room. The room overlooks a busy street but this has been quietened with secondary glazing. A large fan was also running on arrival as this room must get quite hot in summer. Double bed and a comfortable mattress were good and the decor was fresh and modern. An en-suite shower room and WC were good quality too.
Just to advise that anyone who uses a wheelchair or has reduced mobility may need to look elsewhere, due to the historic nature of this building. Breakfast is good and cooked to order.
Quick wins: A handrail in the shower would have been good, and proper coffee for breakfast rather than instant coffee granules and an urn. If they were in place I’d have given top marks.

Horrific, complaint made to booking .com about the MD of this hotel inn

1. On arrival we were met by a member of staff, who I will refer to as No 1 from now on for easy reference, I did not take their names', , who said 'we need to give us bank details for any damage that might occur during our stay, as they have had previous guests only the night before causing damage', I said 'our contract is with Booking.com and that will already be covered', he insisted that we had to give over our bank details and to save any issues we did. We also got an email off of them saying if we had booked through them directly it would of been substantially cheaper than booking.com.
2.The room was very very very hot, and we understand that air conditioning wasn't included in this apparently 4* hotel, but it was intense, they did however supply a fan albeit the adjustment screws were broken. I went downstairs to enquire if they supply a small fridge, I spoke to another member No2, who immediately went into a defensive 'we are not 5 star, what do you expect' I said, [seeing as now i'd been put on the defensive], 'I have never been to any hotel where you don't get a little fridge for water and milk, let alone one so hot without aircon, No1 now got involved and said we do not provide them, so I said OK, and went about my business.
3.About 1 hour later the MD phoned the room claiming we have been abusive, I said we have not, he said I will look at the monitor to get to the truth. About half an hour after this, he and a lady came to the room claiming I was abusive to their staff and had threatened them with bad social media coverage, I said this is not true, please refer to the cctv as you said you would , he Mathew, 'said I don't need to as I trust my staffs opinions, are you calling them liars', so I replied 'whatever, I know what went on', so Mathew brought up No 1, who said that I was blunt but never said I mentioned social media, Matthew then said [before No1 could finish], You will have to leave and the lady bluntly said 'pack your bags you're out of here'. We packed and I noticed the fob for getting in and out of the doors was already deactivated before we could even get the baggage in our car.
4.In asking Matthew to open the doors, he said when are you going, I said 'well I need to get in touch with Booking.com to make sure we get our money back and to procure a new reservation somewhere else', He said 'Just put it down as a no show', I said 'I can't, we need to give 4 days notice for that', he said 'I can assure you I won't do you over', I said,' regardless of that you haven't proven to be honest, I need to do it through the proper channels', he said 'you need to get the hell off of my property'.
4. Back in my room we got in touch with Booking .com and sorted it all out, although whilst doing so we were constantly being called up via the room phone by Matthew harassing us.
5.Still with constantly having to ask for them to open the stairwell doorway to get our stuff, I talked to No1 again, [who to be honest looked completely embarrassed by the whole situation] , he said 'what do you want now,' I said 'Mathew keeps locking us out , so we can't get our stuff', No1 then sorted it.
6. When we finally were going to leave their carpark, I asked Matthew to let us out, who said he would open the car park barrier as we got to it, which when we did he let us sit their for 10 minutes, until another car needed to leave aswell.
7. Their is nothing I have said above that is untrue in any way, and i know Mathew cannot prove otherwise, A very very strange experience.
Although the new hotel was cheaper, and to be honest a lot better, we were insulted, thrown out of the hotel, and treated abysmally. The other hotel was 6 miles from Chesterfield and many hours were wasted, I believe we are entitled to some compensation.

Excellent stay
We stopped off here on a journey down south and were not expecting much from a pub with rooms, however we were wrong and the rooms are finished to a very high standard. Comfortable bed, excellent shower, TV that tilts toward the bed or you can watch on the 2 chairs in the room.
Breakfast was also very good and the staff were very welcoming and friendly

Lovely centrally located hotel
We Stayed for one night,it was easy to find,free secure parking.The staff at the spread eagle were all very helpful ,nothing was too much trouble for them,super quick and easy check in.Our room was lovely,tea and coffee making facilities,nice and clean,lovely big bathroom with shower.we decided to eat on site so booked a table.Our meals were delicious.The hotel is positioned close to the market,lots of bars and restaurants nearby.The hotel also has a well stocked bar and an outdoor seating area with tables.We had a lovely full breakfast with toast,tea ,coffee and juices.would definitely stay at this hotel again

An annoying one…
Nice rooms above a decent bar and restaurant. Hearty breakfast. The place seems recently modernised, with good fixtures and fittings that create a smart first impression. Sadly, all of that is undone the moment you try to sleep. The double bed is too small, and the sub-standard mattress needs replacing with a better quality one. It genuinely drags the whole stay down. Invest in a king size bed (the room size supports one) and a proper mattress, and this place could be very good. Until then, comfort is a major issue. Would I stay here again? Yes, given the aforementioned.
