Just food

Really great service - young lady behind the bar very friendly and helpful. Ordered food - couldn’t believe how good the price was compared to a dinner out in our native Cornwall at the moment (). Food was really good, took a while but worth the wait. Really tasty.

Old fashioned British inn experience; with a few caveats

I liked this old-fashioned pub/inn combination.
First the plus side:
You've got a room upstairs and the pub downstairs. It allows a bit of a social aspect while you are away. The bartender/barmaid was friendly which is also a plus.
A much nicer combination than sterile, spartan modern places. It takes you back to the time before places like Travelodge started to ruin the standard of British hotels.
There is no shortage of places to eat in the immediate vicinity: Subway, Fireaway, Papa Johns, a Chinese takeaway, an Indian sit-down place, even a Wimpy's, plus a large Tesco and Waitrose in walking distance.
The downsides were, the stairs leading up to the room are basically a fire escape that provides an initial bad impression when going to your room. It also feels a bit hazardous, especially in wet weather. You have to maneuverer awkwardly to get into the door with your suitcase. This probably doesn't comply with Health and Safety. It makes no sense. Why not just allow people to go upstairs through the pub?
Second downside is that the single room is pretty small, although I found it adequate for one night. Third downside is that the mattress was way too soft. Not good if you have any back issues.
Also, I wonder why there have been no reviews here since 2021.
In spite of the negative points I would probably return, given the friendly atmosphere of a classic British pub and the many dining options nearby.

Music playing on Till 2 in the morning every nights pace isn’t clean do not stay here if you want to go sleep for work couples kicking off in the street when they leave at 2 no thought for people upstairs in the room room the side of a shoe box not good

We love Danielle

Came down with my friends to have a catch up after lockdown and was served by the amazing Danielle!!! Honestly made our entire evening! Working in hospitality you recognise the people who really put themselves out there. And we think she is amazing. 10/10 will come again due to the experience <3 thank you for an amazing evening can’t wait to see you again !!!

Excellent food

The food is really good under new chef. Great presentation and wide variety of foods offered. The chef comes to ensure everything is satisfactory. The downside is the Mahager who never makes one feel welcome. On our last visit he was on the phone and although we would not expect him to disengage from an important call but do expect some sort of acknowledgement. Not even an apology when he finally deigned to serve us. Unfortunately this was our previous experience but returned because of the quality of the food,
