Located in the center of Valença, Hotel Lara is an excellent base for exploring this historic town. It features modern rooms with balconies and a breakfast room overlooking the fortress.

Adequate but Could be Better
Stayed here for several nights and found the rooms adequate with a comfortable bed and place to sit.
It is located just outside the old town and is an easy walk from both the bus and train station. It is also near a good supermarket and there are several restaurants nearby.
Breakfast was adequate, although there was no plain yoghurt on the last day and the hot selection was not in Bain Marie's so went cold quickly (the bacon and scrambled eggs were nice).
Rooms could be improved with a small fridge and kettle and I don't like this habit in Portugal of providing paper cups individually wrapped in plastic. It was good to see that they didn't provide bottled water (the tap water is perfectly fine to drink or, if you must, but your own).
Staff were not overly friendly, especially the older male on reception.
That said, would I stay there again, yes as it was good value for money (I booked direct, which is unusual for me) as the price was much better.

Hotel was quite nice
Care and cleanliness of the rooms very nice. The staff at the Welcoming were very attentive and helpful. I recommend using the gym.

Don’t recommend
We checked into Hotel Lara after our 4th day of walking the Camino. We had experienced outstanding accommodation along the way with well trained staff. At Hotel Lara we were met (not welcomed) by an older male receptionist who seemed quite dismissive.
The hotel is outdated and in need of a good clean and refurbishment. We were allocated a room on the first floor which was facing a busy main road. The room was spartan to say the least. No fresh/bottled water, fridge, tea/coffee facilities and two cheap plastic wrapped paper cups in the bathroom.
The bed however, was comfortable and the breakfast room had a good selection food. We were not acknowledged or welcomed by the staff serving breakfast.
This hotel is situated in the downtown area of Valença. If staying Valenca, search for accommodation in the old town or even Tui, which is approximately 1km down the road.

Do not stay here walk the extra 1km into Tui
This is not a 3 star hotel and if I was rating on the friendliness of the staff it would be zero. We arrived after a big day before check in time which we totally understand not our 1st time travelling. But the lady on the desk was pretty grumpy and clear you “cant check in” ok got that message received loud and clear. Just wanted to know if we can leave our bags so we can have a look around the fort which we did. When we got back we asked if we could have some ice only to receive the Spanish Inquisition. “What do you want the ice for “ well we are tired and want to get our packs ready for tomorrow and have a quiet drink in our room. The answer “NO” if we want to have a drink it has to be in their bar which was the grungiest table with 2 chairs that looked like no one had sat at in years. It was stuffed in a corner of the unappealing foyer which had zero atmosphere and zero appeal. So no thank you we wont have a drink at your mankie bar and as a result you not only didn’t get us to buy a drink but have left you a bad but deserved review. To anyone that reads this do yourself a favour and walk the extra 1km into Tui it is amazing and has much better accomodation options and pleasant people.

one great stay.
i must admit i don't get some of the reviews unless my room (302) was renovated.hotel lara doesn't look so good from the outside but inside was a different story.
considering i finished my walk for the day very early my room was ready,lifts to all floors,my room was large and looked very smart and had a double bed,good storage space,mini fridge,safety deposit box,free water and coffee facilities,one tidy bathroom with a great shower,throw in a huge balcony which got a lot of sun and was over looking part of the forte and this was one of the best 3 star hotel i have ever stayed in.
