Casas da Levada – a very special accommodation
The Casas da Levada are a beautiful, lovingly designed accommodation in the middle of nature and ideal for anyone who wants to experience Madeira away from mass tourism. Priced on the higher side, but you get something truly special for it.
We stayed in the Casa dos Pereiros, which spans two levels – very pleasant, especially for families. The private kitchen was also practical. The self check-in was uncomplicated and perfect for our late arrival.
We found the many animals on the property, the pool, and of course the Hobbit hole to be especially nice. The fresh bread service in the morning was also a great detail. Upon our arrival, the refrigerator was already stocked with some groceries, and the reception was always very friendly and helpful with any questions.
We were able to explore the Levada Ponta do Pargo directly in the area – a beautiful and pleasantly quiet hike.
Important: A car is actually indispensable here. The approach to the grounds is quite winding and demanding, which is why an automatic vehicle is very pleasant.
A real bullseye for us: extraordinary, close to nature, and with a lot of charm. Clear recommendation for everyone looking for something special off the beaten path.

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations.
We had a pleasant time at this location, though my expectations were higher. Let me start with the positives. We stayed in the yellow house (Bicca). It was a wonderfully spacious place for four people, with a lovely view and a well-equipped kitchen. Breakfast supplies are also fine. The view and the garden are beautiful, and the pool is great too. You can park your car on a private parkingspace next to the reception.
The downsides, for us, lay in the minimal contact with the hosts. Over the course of our four-night stay, we exchanged perhaps ten sentences (including check in and out). No one ever asked if everything was to our liking or if we had any questions. The system involving the logbook at reception is very cumbersome. If you want clean towels of a cleaning of the house, you have to note it down there, and they arrive the next day; the same applies if you run short of anything (but unsure at what time of when). This makes it difficult to coordinate things, such as for your day of departure. We got the impression—partly due to the limited English proficiency—that direct questions were not welcome. In addition, the Wi-Fi in the yellow house isn't good—there’s only a signal in one small upstairs bedroom—and we had an issue with (a lot of) ants in the kitchen.
The location is great for visiting western Madeira, the peaceful atmosphere at the house is lovely (though perhaps less suitable for teenagers), and the décor is really beautiful. We didnt use the honesty bar for we do not drink alcohol, and the snacks were too expensive. So, unfortunately we didn't find the experience particularly customer-oriented or welcoming that we expected on forehand.

while the weather was beyond anyone’s control, I had such a cozy stay and was perfect for the R&R that I needed. The grounds, the room and the entire property was so delightful though there were other guests. I don’t think I saw even one! It was truly so lovely in the rooms. I think everyone was cozied up by their fires during the rainy evenings. I really loved the grocery store, though the prices are a bit higher than in store, you’re paying for the convenience of all your necessities being right there and I thought that was really nice. Plus your room already comes with plenty of eggs, cheese and bacon for breakfast cereals, granola and yogurt as well as milk and juice so there’s not really much else to grab unless you are going to make a nice dinner. I truly loved all of the kitties, despite I’m allergic, they were adorable, kept to themselves, and we’re awfully cuddly when I was leaving (They are also vaccinated so there’s no worries.) on top of that there are chickens, ducks, and sheep on the property and I hope to come back when the weather is better to enjoy that beautiful pool, the vegetation, and the beautiful views!
