Honest Feedback
I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels, and I have never encountered such unprofessional, condescending customer service. Even something as simple as extending my stay turned into a headache. When I asked for clarification about the rate, I was spoken to as if I were illiterate.
Genia, in particular, is repulsive. Condescending, rude, and frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s racist. Every interaction with her required me to dig deep for patience and grace. Then there’s the so-called “manager,” who remains nameless to me because his attitude was so off-putting I had no desire to engage with him. Constant eye-rolling, bad energy—if he were any less welcoming, he’d be a brick wall. And then there’s Elloise, the sneaky little maid who stays quiet but gossips like it’s her full-time job.
This place doesn’t feel like a hostel; it feels like their personal clubhouse. From the smoking area to the kitchen, they’ve marked their territory, making it clear that guests are an afterthought. The entire staff culture is built on dismissiveness and favoritism, except for Lydia and Karla. They were the only two who showed an ounce of professionalism or kindness. If the rest of the team put as much effort into hospitality as they do into gatekeeping their little social circle, this place might actually be decent.
The communal kitchen is great—except for the fact that PEOPLE STEAL YOUR FOOD. Labeling doesn’t help; if it looks good, it’s gone. This happened to me, and it was my final straw. I went to reception, demanded a refund, and check out the next day.
The last insult came on my departure day. I had perishable groceries and asked if I could leave them in the fridge until 2:30 PM, as my next check-in wasn’t until 3 PM. I left at 10 AM to explore and returned at 2 PM to find that someone had removed my entire bag of food and left it out on the counter for hours. My things were nearly room temperature and ruined. When I asked Genia if she knew who did it, she offered no support—just indifference. That was the second day in a row someone tampered with my things, and I was understandably upset. Instead of acknowledging the issue or even pretending to care, Genia accused me of throwing a tantrum, then shut the door in my face. A heated argument followed, and only Karla—who actually listened—attempted to resolve things. She reimbursed me for my groceries, and we threw them out together.
As I stood outside waiting for my ride, I listened as they changed the door code—as if I were the threat, not the thieves and bullies in the house.
And that’s really the heart of the issue here: the social atmosphere is tainted by the staff. Their behavior sets the tone, and it’s one of exclusion, pettiness, and discomfort. Add in one particularly insufferable guest, and the entire vibe was unbearable. I couldn’t tolerate the hostility any longer.
I won’t outright say don’t stay here, but if you do:
• Put on your assertive hat.
• Safeguard your belongings.
• Don’t get too friendly with the staff.
• And if you’re a Black female traveler… proceed with caution.
This is my fourth hostel in Mexico, and I have never felt this type of energy before. Wouldn’t return.
