Friendliest Hotel We Have Ever Stayed At!
The owner Juan Carlos is one of the most thoughtful, compassionate people you will ever meet! We highly value good social skills and customer service when seeking lodging. Juan and his staff Joel, Maria and Isabel embody that perfectly. Our well-being was checked on frequently. Juan Carlos offered us several rides to our daily destinations, gave us free pizza one day and even went so far as to escort us to the doctor to get a remedy for my ear. He invited us to eat at Las Quekas and paid for our meal! The room was clean, cozy and quiet. For budget travelers, we settled there very nicely. We were within walking distance to the farmers market, loncherias, bahia and bus station. Our stay at Hotel Platas was unexpectedly one of the most memorable in all our travels. We will be back!

Eww place, que asco!!!
Filthy! Nasty wash hand basin, nasty bathroom tiles, nasty pillows belong in the garbage!! The beds are as hard as rocks, outdated TV. The old a.c worked OK .They should be paying people to stay there! Stayed one night and got out of there. Horrible experience.staff is unprofessional. Eww place!!!!

I reserved a room at Hotel Platas sight unseen because all of the (five?) reviews were very positive, and the rate seemed good for Chetumal. Thinking back, the reviews were about the owner, not the hotel. Later on, I found out that the owner was the guy who lives next door to the hotel entrance and who briefly greeted us as we passed by on our arrival. That was the first and last that we saw of him. The receptionists on duty seemed to average twenty years of age.
The reservation, and the original plan, was for a room for one person, which was 450 pesos. However, on the way to see the room, the receptionist mentioned that there was no hot water in the single rooms! If I wanted hot water, I would have to take a double room at 500 pesos. This sounded great to my friend from Chetumal, as he could have a "free" hotel stay for himself. I reluctantly agreed.
The room was pretty awful. Everything was painted white -- some time ago. There were black smudges on it. The bathroom fixtures worked reluctantly. Of course, there was a little mildew on the shower curtain. The bathroom window, which looked onto a cinderblock wall about six inches away, would not shut. The curtains were a weird layering of a short one tailored to the window plus a long one that did not reach all the way across.
Four pluses:
The room window worked great, but I never needed it as it was always so hot outside.
There was a small (19"?) flatscreen that had SKY service if you are interested in that sort of thing. I never watch television and was confused by the controls and menu and just gave up when looking for some music to listen to.
The air conditioning worked okay.
Once I got the receptionist's writing of the password deciphered, the Wi Fi worked fine.
Back to the negatives:
The pillows were filled with now-crumbly foam.
There was a halfhearted attempt to do something nice for the guests by providing a couple pieces of candy in a huge basket that included towels and toiletries. However, half the time the candy was covered in sugar ants, as I realized after they crawled onto my hand and arm, so I ended up throwing most of it away (there was also a small cockroach in this upstairs room that I never caught).
The towels were the final straw. Keep in mind that Chetumal is humid and can be quite hot as it was on my visit. I was annoyed but not surprised that the two bath towels were threadbare. One of them had two dime-sized holes in it. There was an extensive notice posted above the towel bar in the bathroom about not using them as rags; otherwise the guest would be charged for Individual laundry. Anyhow, the maid did make up the room after the first night, but I was surprised to see that the precious towels had not been changed! I took the towels to the reception and was told that there were no more towels in the hotel! I could hang them over the railing to see if they dried that way!
I checked some other hotels while there. A few blocks away, Hotel Los Cocos, the classic Chetumal hotel, had a big (permanent?) sign advertising 675 pesos and the Villanueva was a few pesos more. There are a kajillion hotels in the area around Los Cocos, the "historical area" (i.e., the few Maya Deco buildings that survived the 1950 hurricane) very convenient to the museums. My advice is to head to that area and look around if you have not already made up your mind -- or if you are confronted by a room like one at Hotel Platas.

Excellent and friendly
Our stay at Casa Platas was great! We kind do stumbled in while wandering around town with out packs and the owner Juan was like a friend immediately. He was interested in our trip and seemed eager to accommodate us, made us feel very at home. The hotel is very clean and centrally located. All of the staff was very friendly. After our stay, Juan Carlos offered to drive us personally to Bacalar since he was heading there as well where he showed us around and we shared ceviche. Great guy, great hotel, I recommend it!

El hotel esta en una zona tranquila, céntrica y de fácil acceso, la habitación era pequeña pero cómoda y limpia, el personal muy amable nos ayudo en todo momento, solamente que no pudimos hacer uso del estacionamiento ya que la recepcionista no podía llevarnos y dejar sola la recepción, aunque la calle es muy tranquila y se puede dejar el auto en las puertas del hotel.
