Desert Island Paradise

Fenfushi is an extraordinary island and the White Tern is the place to stay on it. We spent 5 idyllic days enjoying the fabulous beaches, lagoon, stunning sea, and the wonderful food and hospitality provided by Haleem and Shifa, who run the White Tern B&B.
The White Tern only has 4 rooms, I believe. We were in room 101. It is a good size double with a shower room and great A/C. Some fittings need attention (a wobbly tap and towel rail), and don't go expecting luxury. But for around $50 dollars a night for B&B (the Maldivian breakfast is good) it offers astonishingly great value. And the room is not why you are on holiday here.
If you like fish, then you should eat at the White Tern every night. Haleem's hobby is fishing and the nightly grilled reef fish is beautifully fresh, delicious, plentiful, and only $8 a time!
This is a local island and so no alcohol is permitted. Also, it is respectful to cover shoulders, and upper legs when wandering around the island or swimming in the lagoon near the White Tern, which has a beach that the local Muslim population can use. 300 metres away is the best beach, Bikini Beach, which tourists are free to use in normal swimwear. All of the beaches are stunning and there are so few tourists on the island (at peak season, maybe 40 to 50) that you will generally have an entire beach to yourselves for hours on end.
The reef surrounding the island is 300 metres out from the beach and we were not experienced enough swimmers to snorkel beyond it. Snorkelling off the beaches is disappointing, although we spotted some fish and a few small sharks. For better snorkelling, sign up to a half day with Haleem visiting some prime spots by boat. Or go on his Whale Shark or Manta Ray tours.
One reason Fenfushi remains so unspoilt (although litter in some parts of the island is becoming a problem) is the comparative difficultly getting there. The ferry from Male takes far too long (8 to 10 hours) and should be avoided unless you are going to island hop out and back, staying on, say, 4 or 5 islands on its route. (We intend to do this on our next trip. Dhigurah looks fabulous and other islands will be worth visiting). There is one daily speedboat from Male to Fenfushi. Otherwise you need to take the more regular boats to Dhigurah ($45pp) and arrange with Haleem for the 35 minute transfer from there to Fenfushi ($120 for the two of us). Whether you are in small or large speedboats (and we have done 5 seaters, a 17 seater, and several 60 seater boats) , expect a rough ride when it is windy. Your flight neck pillow and noise cancelling headphones are well worth using.
A wonderful 5 days. We didnt want to leave. We were waved off by Shifa and their son Ahad.
Visit before others discover this extraordinary island.

Fensushi White Tern & booking.com appalling

We had booked this accommodation in Nov 2025 with booking.com. We requested a transfer from Mali to the hotel and this was agreed and advised that transfer details would be provided nearer our departure date. We heard nothing so requested transfer details, via booking.com website 6 days before departure from Heathrow. No response. We contacted booking.com 2 days later (1 hour call). They could not make phone or email contact either and promised to continue to attempt to make contact with the hotel, and if unsuccessful in 48 hours, would make alternate arrangements. We heard nothing. We contacted booking.com again (2 calls one for 2 hours which they then hung up, and a second to cancel), who didn't seem to be aware of our previous contact. Again they could make no contact and advised that we should travel as planned, and contact them from Mali airport if we still didn't have transfer details. We were not prepared to fly to Mali, and then have to contact booking.com in the hope they would find us alternate accommodation given our previous experience with booking.com customer service. They refused to provide us with alternate accommodation, and advised that we could cancel but we would incur a cancellation fee. Our flights which we had booked separately would not provide a refund if we cancelled. We booked alternate accommodation directly ourselves on another island, and cancelled our booking less cancellation fee. Dont trust booking.com to their word, and dont trust white tern. We are seeking a refund for the cancellation via our credit card company and, if necessary the UK courts. Hope this helps others.

Number 1 place to stay in Male

Amazing Apartment Hotel in Hulamale. High end fixtures and fittings, comfortable bed, super clean and well thought out space.
We recieved excellent 5 star service, both on arrival and departure. Picked up from airport by Mr. Minto and driven in style to the apartment in the Hotels Range Rover.
Great communication and swift check-in organised by Aslam.
Would highly recomend this place whether for business or pleasure.

Amazing, peaceful, and luxury stay at affordable prices on the Maldives

Haleem and Shifa are amazing and wonderfully hospitable. When the airlines lost me luggage, they provided me a set of clothes. Haleem arranged to find my luggage. And when I needed tea and toiletries, he ordered it through his sister for me. Also, he custom made my sashimi and ceviche dishes from fresh fish. Haleem also removed a sea urchin spine that pricked my fingers, several times. Totally, peaceful and rejuvenating experience.

Almost private little piece of paradise

What to say after spending over a week in paradise? I will not focus on the property itself. It’s simple, but comfortable enough and all you need. The main point here is the experience this family can provide. You (and maybe a hand full of other fellow guests) are the only tourists on this little piece of paradise. And Haleem and Shifa will do everything they can to make your holidays an amazing experience. Good food, specially the beach barbecue which they organized twice for us and it was super romantic. Make sure you have some homemade chapati. But to us the most important part was that Haleem understood exactly what we wanted to do regarding tours. We didn’t want to dive with whalesharks and mantas among hundreds of people and dozens of boats. We did it before from another place we stayed a couple days prior and it was madness. Haleem took us searching for the sharks when there was no one else there (at our own risk of not finding any) and sometimes we didn't find what we were looking for, but when we found the sharks it was magical. Haleem has an eye for it. So do yourself a favour and organize it with him to go search for the sharks when it’s quiet. Seeing the sharks at the cost of harming them or yourself being hit by a boat is not worth it. And Haleem is the guy to make it happen (again, they are wild animals and may be there or not but if they are, this guy will probably find them). Also his tips for snorkeling around the island were great. Our freedives on the “house reef” were amazing and we saw devil rays, eagle rays, sharks and lots of other life. Don’t hesitate to come here if you love nature. As a final side note, we recommend to fly from Male to Maamigili and then transfer to Didhdhoo instead of taking a speedboat as our experience with that (arranged by another accommodation) was terrible.
