Beautiful, traditional & peaceful family-run ryokan

I stayed at Shiroyamakan for one night on a solo trip and had an amazing stay. This 140-year ryokan is being run by the 4th and 5th generations and it’s very much a family affair.
I stayed in the Triple Room with Private Bathroom, a beautiful traditional room with shoji screens all around the bedroom, tatami mats, and a small seating area overlooking the rear garden. I used both onsen during my stay - one faces the river and the other faces a privacy screen on the garden side. You are able to use either of them privately, on a first-come-first served basis.
The kaiseki dinner (served at 6pm) and traditional Japanese breakfast (served at 7:45am) were both fantastic. Several family members are involved - they do the hunting, foraging, cooking and serving.
The 4th generation owner of Shiroyamakan took me on a complimentary driving tour of the town and up to the observation deck, which was highly enjoyable.
The public spaces are beautiful and calming. There’s a self-serve espresso machine, and fresh, drinkable spring water. Like many ryokan, if you stay solo you have to pay for two - it was totally worth it.

Stunning Shiroyamakan

Wow, this is the most beautiful place, run by the same family for many years. The father takes all guests on a guided tour of the village and the lookout high up on the hillside. The rooms are simple but stunning, our room had private toilet and bathroom, some rooms shared. The downstairs dining room was beautiful and the included dinner and breakfast very much underplayed on the website. Dinner had a dozen or so small plates with an array of unusual tastes, including bees (a first for us) which they showed us pictures of the family extracting from the forest. There were also two onsens which were very relaxing after spending the day looking around Shirakawago a world heritage site. We loved this hotel, history and great service.

Very special place to stay

We enjoyed one night at Shiroyamakan with our family, staying in two rooms which were next door to each other. One had an ensuite bathroom which we were all able to use. The rooms were incredibly comfortable. This is very much a family run guest house and the family treated us very well. We were lucky to be able to check in early, allowing us time to go and explore Shirakawago village. We enjoyed the onsen with views over the river and were given a minibus tour of the village including a stop at the viewpoint with wonderful views over the whole village. It was good to stay into the evening after the majority of the tourists had moved on. We also enjoyed an exquisite traditional tasting menu with ingredients sourced from the local area.
We enjoyed our day exploring the village, walking to the far end to see the Shirakawago three houses and across the bridge to enjoy time by the river , as well as tasting an award winning dessert. The guest house is situated just across the road from the small bus terminal making it very convenient for travel.

Fantastic ryokan, incredibly friendly hosts

Were on our individual 4-week trip through Japan 1 night at Shiroyamakan.
Location / general:
Located at the beginning of the historic village, 80m to the quite steep but shortest path to the viewpoint (observation deck), 200m to the kombini & busshuttle to the observation deck. Were there by rental car. Optimal, parking for hotel guests directly at the house. Everything fantastically maintained, Japanese-style dining room, 2 onsen for private use, one of them with stunning views of the river, an absolute "must". The senior manager drove us in the first class minibus around the village at 15:00 & then to the observation deck, English explanations rolled off the production line. That was mega helpful, we immediately had orientation regarding the distances. From the observation deck (the best place for the photo, especially in the morning) we walked to the village (10-15min).
The host family is incredibly sympathetic, mindful and attentive, you feel comfortable from the start, even the welcome is wonderfully relaxing.
Rooms:
We had a "triple room with private bathroom" left in traditional ryokan style, there are still "newly" designed rooms. Spacious, bathroom (with tub) & separate toilet, fridge, traditional Japanese "balcony/loggia". Kimonos. We cannot give a Recommendation regarding the "new" and "old" rooms, we found ours first class, the other "new" we did not see (you can see it on the homepage).
Dinner / breakfast:
First-class quality and absolutely fantastic service from the Junior Owners, an experience that was part of the consistently fantastic Ryokan-Kaiseki experiences of our trip. The modern Japanese minimalist dining room has a fantastic atmosphere that is hard to capture in photos.
Value for money: very good.
Conclusion: we can highly recommend this ryokan to anyone planning to visit Shirakawago/Shirakawa-mura. The house, the rooms, the owner family & last but not least the food create a wonderful atmosphere.
Be sure to plan an overnight stay because this is the only way to experience the place in the evening & morning a little more relaxed without many bus tourists.

Tengoku

It is very difficult to evaluate this accommodation because the words seem weak and insufficient to grasp all the details that have been taken care of, first on the frame itself, from the dishes, of remarkable elegance, to the architecture, which updates the traditional ryokan in a masterful way. Then, on the welcome, which exceeds the highest standards, even Japanese. It is a family that welcomes you here, with all its heart, all its soul and a huge wish to share its history and culture. This sharing of course goes through the kitchen and how can we not congratulate this audacity and sophistication? Such meals- in Paris- would require months of advance bookings. The crowning achievement of this dream is the sento overlooking the river: a pure moment of ecstasy. This is our third trip to Japan but this accommodation has something special and we will never forget it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
