We loved this ryokan

Not many current reviews for this 100 year-old ryokan. There were other Western guests the nights we stayed, but most of the clientele were Japanese. We liked: 1.) the location. It's a 10 - 15 minute taxi from the Oji train station. (Taxi queue just outside the station). Taxi fare is 1,600 Yen. The hotel sits on a hilly area, thick with trees and a few local houses. Wonderful views. Nara is on the far horizon, and Shigisanchogo-ji Temple can be seen nestled in the trees nearby. An easy 20 minute taxi ride took us to the Horyu-ji Temple area. Cost, nearly 3,000 Yen. 2.) We loved the room, Japanese style, which looked newly refurbished. Quite large, with entrance area, sitting room, separate sleeping room, (mattresses on the floor), and a terrace overlooking the forested hills that surround the hotel. We did not get the in-room hot bath tub, which is an extra cost. Bathroom had double sinks and a very good shower, Again, everything looked new. Only quibbles: no comfortable chairs to sit in. The tatami mat floor is OK, but it's not for sitting. No English language channels on the TV, but that's common in Japan. 3.). We loved the evening dinners that come with the price of the room. Top quality Japanese formal dinner, different each of the three nights we were guests. Service is delightful, but English is quite limited. Breakfast is also Japanese style unless you request the 'Western-style" breakfast, which is only OK. We were charged extra for hot coffee. Japanese tea is included. An excellent stay and we would love to come back. This area has quite a lot to offer, including very convenient train service from Kyoto and Osaka. Less than 20 minutes form the Oji station to Tennoji Station in Osaka. Highly recommended ryokan.

FABULOUS Ryokan!

We loved our stay at Kakimotoya. The food, service, room, and onset were great. I just love this place. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Our room was so neat and clean overlooking cherry trees in bloom. You can use the tub to death on the balcony or go to the public bath in the ryokan. The view from the tub was magnificent - view and hearing the birds sing and the pitter patter of rain.
The food was the best. We had the best breakfasts and dinners.
I love it!

Thank you for coming Kakimotoya. We greatly appreciate receiving your comment.
And we are very pleased that you were very satisfied to stay in Kakimotoya.
We think when cherry trees are in bloom is the best season, but colored leaves in autumn and tender green in spring are also mafnificent view. If you have chance to come to Japan in another season, you can see the differnt side of Japan.
We are really thankful that you came to and love Japan.

Romantic weekend with the wife

My wife and I booked the room with the private ofuro on the balcony for two nights, we were also with other family but they had their own room, also with a private ofuro. The view is great. The sakura in was in bloom and we had an assortment of weather dressing the mountain side.
The food. I've seen reviews where they say the food is bland. Not so. These people probably have never used their whole palate before and dont understand the delicacy that is Japanese food. It isn't about drinking sauces or making food overly sweet/salty (aka american food). We started with the kaizeki dinner. They gave the family a private room. It was a lot of deliciously tasting and beautiful plated Japanese food. The kaiseki style carried on for breakfast.
For our second dinner, we chose to do sukiyaki. Now, the family enjoyed it but I would have preferred to have had another kaiseki dinner as the sukiyaki was done family style and we did the cooking. It was no Imahan sukiyaki. The third choice would have been shabu shabu.
For our last breakfast, we chose to have the Japanese style breakfast over the intercontinental breakfast (why would we get anything other than Japanese food in a very traditional Japanese area?). again, delicious.
The location: it is about 10 minutes taxi from Oji station which is a bit out of the way from Nara station. I believe it took us 30-45 minutes to get to Nara from Oji. This makes it remote and quiet. there is a shrine close by but we didnt have time to see it.
Cons: the rooms dont have a private shower so you have to use the public onsen to shower then come back to your private ofuro.
The service in the morning was significantly different that service at night. We thoroughly enjoyed the staff, we just had much better service at night. This was apparent during meals.

Thank you for coming Kakimotoya. We appreciate your wonderful comments.
First of all, we have to apporogize that you felt uncomfortable during dinner.
Some staffs can`t speak English at all, so they fell embarrassed to speak English.
However, We are trying to make foreigners comfortable.
Thank you for your praises about meals.
Traditional Japanese food takes time to eat because guests enjoy the appearance of the dish and also enjoy conversation with a room attendant.
As you say, our ryokan is located in the forest. There is nothig around, so we provide all guests with great meal and healing.
We are very pleased that you feld relaxed.
Thank you very much and we appreciate that you love Kakimotoya.
We hope that you will have a chance to come to Japan.

Wonderful experience

We spent one night at Kakimotoya. The ryokan is tucked in a mountain side, and our room had a wonderful view of the mountains and trees. Staff was warm, accommodating, and very helpful even to a non-Japanese speaker. The onsen was clean, large, and had good bath products. It would be nice, though, if the ryokan provided more towels as each room was only given one set of towels. There is no view from the onsen, but it is a nice size.
Our room had a small tub at the balcony, which was a treat. The tub was very clean and easy to operate. You can soak in it while taking in the view.
As far as I can tell, there's no WiFi in the rooms.
The meals (dinner and breakfast) were delicious, and very filling. Staff was extremely helpful.
Overall, we had a lovely experience and I would recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for a quiet, calm get-away.

Expensive for what it was, disappointing food but good traditional experience

The hotel was very traditional, if a little dated. We had a private bath on our balcony which really made it for us and the location was stunning and very peaceful. However, we were really disappointed with the food which was pretty bland and uninteresting. The hotel staff speak very little English but it was fairly easy to get by.
