World Heritage Site

To the right of the main road, there is another monastery complex, the Kongo Sanmai.in, which is part of the World Heritage Site. A lovely old lady collects 300¥ and explains one thing or another. A beautiful garden is part of it. The giant sequoias are noteworthy. We were not guests of the facility.

A must-do.

Beautiful, comfortable structure near the center. You sleep in a structure next to the temple. The temple closes its doors at 5:00 PM. You must arrive early; otherwise, you will be left outside. Dinner at 5:30 PM in a large room with the other guests. In the morning at 6:30 AM, there is prayer, and immediately after, around 7:30 AM, breakfast. A nice place to relax. At check-in, a kind lady assisted us, explaining everything and even knowing a few words in Italian. Good dinner and breakfast.

Lovely temple stay with great food and gorgeous location!
We stayed one night at Kongo Sanmai-in with dinner and breakfast. The temple is located withdrawn from the main street which makes the location very quiet and serene.
The food was very good and a great way to experience the buddhistic vegetarian dishes. And the morning prayer was a great experience as well. We were very happy that we stayed at this temple for our temple stay experience at Koyasan!
Some things to know if you wanna stay here as well:
- Some of the staff could speak English, but it's definitely a benefit to know Japanese, especially for the morning prayer where all (for our prayer session at least) was explained in Japanese.
- The rooms are not the most soundproof, meaning you might be able to hear the ones staying in the neighbouring room if they speak loudly. But it wasn't really an issue for us
- The baths are shared (even if you have your own toilet) and they are traditionally Japanese like the ones you might see at a public bathhouse with a shared bathtub and showers on a row. Its a fun and authentic experience, but if you're shy or uncomfortable with showering with others, just ensure you have showered before arriving here.

Very overpriced for what is offered at AUD$700 per night. Housekeeping was good and food was satisfactory. The room was lovely. However we found the monks, who were the only administrative contact, to be unhelpful, unfriendly and not engaged in sharing any sort of experience except the morning prayers. Unfortunately they only accommodated those who spoke Japanese. The gardens displayed on the website look well maintained and bear little resemblance to the current conditions.

Not one of the impervious temples of Koyasan. This temple has the "shukubo" lodging for you to sleep and participate in the life of the monks, but I just went to visit and didn't stay
