A return even more beautiful than the first.
We had already been guests of the Basiliani – CDSHotels in Otranto five years ago and we kept a wonderful memory of it. Returning this year was a confirmation, or rather something more: this time it seemed even more beautiful to us.
We found a fascinating, well-maintained, and relaxing property, with its particular architecture inspired by the history of the Basilian monks, the green spaces, the SPA, and that Salento atmosphere that immediately invites you to slow down and enjoy your vacation.
But the real surprise was once again, and perhaps more so than five years ago, the cuisine: incredibly perfect. From breakfast to dinner, we found quality, variety, care, and taste at a very high level. Every day there were different offerings, well-presented dishes, and flavors capable of transforming even the mealtime into an important part of the vacation.
Truly, compliments to the chef and the entire kitchen brigade, as well as to the dining room staff for their professionalism and attention.
Five years ago we left satisfied; this time we returned home even more enthusiastic. It is nice to return to a place you remembered with pleasure and discover that, over time, it has even managed to improve itself.
For us, the Basiliani remains a special place in Otranto and, after this second experience, we can say it with even greater conviction: we will return.

Overall a good stay
Overall clean and very comfortable. The staff were mainly helpful and friendly. We liked the hotel but it is was a maze of corridors and stairs, inside and out. It was fine once you got used to the layout. The rooms were comfortable and cleaned well. Surprised that there are no soft chairs in the room, just one hard desk chair. The walk to town was about 10 minutes, best out of the back door. The pool was nice but the same depth all over, you can just stand up if tall. The breakfast was typical Italian with a good selection. Just a few niggles that did not spoil the overall experience.
The bed was a bit too firm for us and we are used to a firm bed at home.
You have to pay 20 euro deposit for each Pool towel and 3 Euro if you want another clean one during your stay, never seen this before. Previous Italian hotels have had a plentiful supply of pool towels each day.
The hotel has no drinking tap water available, so you have to pay 2 Euro for a small bottle of water. Normally chilled drinking water is available in hotels to refill water bottles.
The bed was a bit too firm for us and we are used to a firm bed at home.

Good location &pool area
Great location with just a short walk into town. The room was okay but we were informed on arrival that the hotel controlled the room air con and not us, to turn off the air con you would need to open the door to the terrace, we were on the ground floor so this was not suitable. The room was absolutely freezing all night. Breakfast was exactly the same every day and poor quality. The bar area is in the reception area, on the night of the World Cup semi final the bar was closed so we couldn’t even buy a bottle of wine while we watched the football in our room. The basic requirements of a decent hotel is surely to operate a functioning bar. We were not allowed a late checkout as they had a large group arriving but we did note that our room, vacated at 11am , was still unmade at 15:30. On a more positive note, the pool area is fabulous, most of the staff were amazing and helpful. Now I know the score with the rubbish bar and boring breakfast I would actually stay here again due to the easy access to town and the pool area.

The hotel itself is a clean resort with a beautiful swimming pool, one of few in the area you can actually use to swim laps and spend all afternoon in.
Unfortunately however the hotel is completely let down by the rooms, the beds, the rude young staff and the lack of assistance.
We stayed for 3 nights and managed to get next to no sleep throughout our entire stay due to the beds feeling similar to sleeping on concrete. On the first day we knew we were going to struggle, however we wanted to give everything a fair chance, so we waited for the second night and we did not sleep at all due to the discomfort. My partner discussed the issue with reception and was faced with rude dismissive staff, who ignored the fact that I have a disability which was made worse by the lack of sleep and general stiffness. We were told that the hotel was fully booked so we couldn’t be moved, and nothing could be done other than a mattress topper. The topper was handed to us and was clearly old, the filling was balled up in each section leading to even more discomfort. At this point we looked for a new hotel for the final night and realised rooms were available but only suites, which we would have paid for, but we were lied to.
The bedroom was incredibly small with no privacy, and the room unlocked from a wallet containing only bank cards, which we realised when we got in and saw we had left the kesecure room key.
The staff are snobbish and only polite to older couples and families.
