A charming hotel and perfect base to discover Ischia

A charming, well-appointed boutique hotel far enough from the hubbub of central Forio to feel serene, yet close enough to access all needed shops and services. The rooms are a good size, there's a lovely terrace on which to have breakfast and another to watch the sunset, and some sunbeds on the lower level.
The staff is lovely and attentive, and breakfast is very good, though it feels at time a bit rationed (e.g., small portions of cereal).
My only quibble was that the mattress in my room was extremely uncomfortable, and not fit for a mid-range hotel. After two bad nights, I let the manager know and they added a mattress topper to it, which helped. But I feel that for the price, the mattress should have been comfortable from the start. In fact, the mattresses looked more like a hand-stitched affair you'd find in your grandmother's attic than something fit for a hotel.
With the certainty of improved mattresses, I would without a doubt become a regular guest -- Ischia is wonderful, and Umberto a Mare a great base to discover it. You can't help but feel relaxed staying there.

Sea retreat near the town center

Lovely boutique hotel right on the water. I initially booked it to stay closer to the town center after staying at a thermal spa hotel in the Citara area so I could explore the town more.
Firstly, Umberto a Mare is far more comfortable and attentive than the higher rated thermal spa hotel. Their welcome and atmosphere makes you feel that you’re truly in your own picturesque space.
Although I picked Umberto for the location, I hardly wanted to leave the hotel. Instead I took advantage of being around the serenity of the water and sun during the day, and went around town in the evening. And I’d absolutely stay here again.
Whether you stay at the hotel or not- you must have at least one dinner during sunset at the restaurant. Views and food are phenomenal.
