A place to consider, 2 steps from the sea
I had a very good contact on my arrival with Sony's wife and daughter. I met Sony later that day when he returned. All three are very friendly and caring.
I spent one night. The room is simple but clean, as well as the bedding. A beautiful small terrace with table and chairs and sunbed are available.
The view is incredible, both on Mount Agung and on the sea, and a rooftop is also available for breakfast.
I did not need the air conditioning and ceiling fan because it was not very hot in the evening. So I can't talk about it.
However, I would like to make it clear that there is no hot shower. For me it was important.

Typical homestay
Just as what we expected. Booked as it was cheap. Family welcomed us and paid full amount upfront. The room is really basic. Only water at a charge. Not the cleanest accom but there are amazing views from the rooftop. Very short walk to many warungs shops and dive centres. Only 1min walk to beach. Space to park motorbike. Basic banana pancake. During our stay they accommodated earlier breakfast as we were diving. Don't go with high expectations.

Wonderful host, wonderful terrace, perfect remote and authentic homestay
We spent a beautiful week at Soni Homestay in July 2019. We really enjoyed it! It’s a typical, simple homestay, but very clean. In the room, you don’t have aircondition, but a blower at the ceiling, which is really comfortable. There’s enough space between toilet and shower, so you don’t have to sit down while taking your shower. ;-) The terrace at the roof is priceless!!! That’s simply one of the three main reasons to stay here! You‘ve got an amazing view at Gunung Agung and the Ocean. We enjoyed it every morning and every afternoon for a sundowner. You’ll have breakfast at the beach (only 25 meters away) in the shadow of a tree. So enjoy à Bali kopi and a tasty omelette or banana pancake while watching the wooden fisher boats coming home or while counting the flying fishes. Yummy yummy! :-) This is the second reason to be here! The beach is also the perfect place for snorkeling and watching turtles or enjoying a professional balinese massage from Soni’s wife while listening to the relaxing sound of the waves. Last but not least, Soni and his family are the third reason to stay here! They are all very kind, friendly, open minded and helpful. Soni will organize almost everything you need, if you want to: scooter, transfer, excursions, professional balinese massage, laundry, snorkeling gear, amazing balinese cake... And he knows a lot of interesting things to tell you about balinese culture, and the real life behind the touristic facade if you‘re interested in. We really appreciated chatting and talking to him every day. He is also very engaged in trash heroes who clean the beach and in helping the poor people in the backcountry. So if you had a great time in Bali and if you’ve got some old t-shirts or rupiahs left, Soni will help those who don’t profit from the balinese tourism and who are struggling for water and surviving in the dry backcountry. Soni wouldn’t ask you or tell you about by his own, I think (He is very decent). He told us because we asked a lot.
So, this is a perfect, remote place for those, looking for a simple place to stay in a warm, cozy and authentic athmosphere with contact to wonderful people. And for those who care about the social and ecological environment. We will come back for sure! Terima kasih!

Worst experience in 20 years.
I have visited Bali for 20 years and Amed for 4 so l know my way around and know how to conduct myself. I arrived at Sony homestay as per my booking but within a few minutes of meeting the owner,Sony, l was told he preferred me to pay for my whole stay in advance.
When l said that was not how it works he became a bit hostile.
It was the eve of a big religious festival so rather than leaving immediately l decided to stay til l could find other accommodation.
I come to Amed to enjoy peace and quiet but found the room was elevated over the family area, the back of a restaurant and the road was about 20 meters away. Also there was a leak in the back of the toilet and there was no avoiding the deep puddle when walking into the bathroom.
On the second day l found another homestay on the same beach but away from the road more to my liking and told Sony l would leave the next morning after the ceremonies. He said l should pay him for the whole booking even though it was not suitable.
On leaving l paid for 2 days and walked off. He was not happy. Turns out l had also booked in to his brothers place. Suddenly that afternoon he finds me on the beach and he becomes my new best friend. He offers me a cottage right on the beach. The price turned out to be higher than advertized l later found out. I said l would be interested but not for 5 days since l was fine where l was. He wanted a "deposit" so he could close off the dates. The next day, when l went to pay for tge agreed one day, he wanted a full 7 days up front.
I couldn't believe someone who is struggling for business would be so hostile to a client. He said l couldn't be trusted. Needless to say l told him he could find someone else.

Why do I want you to pay in full? When you came to my house, he said you want to stay at Sony homestay 5 days you want to pay after you leave. I say it's okay. after I closed my room 5 days, last night you stayed, I wanted to leave. You said because you got a cheaper room than my room. the second you come again and want to stay in my room on the beach for 7 days. I don't want to close the room 7 days, if you don't want to pay upfront. because I don't want the same incident to happen again. thanks

Best stay in 2+ years of travelling! ❤️
Such a great family, helping with everything they can for you to have a great time! The room was absolutely amazing: large, clean, big and super comfy bed, nicely decorated, balcony with chairs and table, free tea& coffee and with huge Windows facing the sea. Rooms are cleaned every day! Breakfast is so nice and served on the roof terrace with 360degree views over Mt. Agung and the beautiful sea. Direct access to the beach with shady area and free deckchairs to relax the whole day. Also close to many very good eateries and many activities in the area. The host will help you with everything you need to organise, including taxi, boat booking, snorkelling, etc. Excellent value for money and most of all, the people are so great! What more can you wish for? We went back after a few days on Gili Air island and stayed for another 10 days!
