Return stay—older style comfort, quiet, close to the beach front.
My second stay as the first visit, a solo trip several years ago felt safe, comfortable and enjoyable. Stayed last time in the ‘small exotic room’ which has a fantastic tall timber ceiling plus outside private courtyard with toilet and shower (loved it), this time upgraded to another room as maintenance work happening. Very happy with tropical fruit, yogurt, fruit, coffee breakfast and facilities there for longer term stays as it is associated with the nearby Power of Now yoga studio. As a nice touch, a free session included for hotel guests which we enjoyed.
We booked direct using WhatsApp and only comment was that there were sometimes delays in response, but that didn’t interfere with the final check in process. Greeted with a cool washer and a fresh watermelon drink, much appreciated. By the way, great warung directly opposite where all the locals eat—we ate the best and cheapest meals there out of all our stay in Bali.

Old world charm
We had walked past the property while staying at the Mercure last year and wondered what lay beyond the canons at the entrance.
Old world charm greeted us. Stayed in room 3, perfect.
Clean spacious and filled with quirky furniture. A 4 post bed with nets.
Wonderful staff, clean bathroom with plenty of hot water.
A large salt water pool to cool off in.
We enjoyed our 6 nights here.
Knowing the area, dining options are a short walk away or a Gojek will get you to most parts of Sanur for 21,000 idr.

Beautiful place close to the beach
I loved staying here, the house and the furnitures are really beautiful. Nice and big room and the shared space really nice with pool and sofa area. The people that works here made me feel very welcome, bringing me breakfast every morning and helped and assisted in every way. Highly recommend this place

Quiet place close to beach
This place is in a quiet area of Sanur, only 7 min walk to a nice beach with restaurants, sun beds and the affiliated yoga school Power of Now Oasis. The reason I booked a room at the Kolonial House was to get to know their yoga school.
It wasn't quiet what I expected based on reviews. It was one of the most expensive places I have stayed at in Bali and one of the least enjoyable.
To start with the positives: the room (standard room number 2) has high ceilings and both AC and a fan, and an ensuite bathroom.
At the entrance, there are 4 room facing each other (I guess the standard rooms). Then there is the reception area, a kitchen and behind it, a pool with gazebo and a few more rooms.
In the back of the property is the exotic room and some bigger rooms with a second pool and gazebo.
The place itself is very quiet and peaceful, I had soms good nights of rest and it has 2 pools with gazebos and a kitchen to make a tea or coffee.
The things I didn't enjoy:
The room was basic (ok it was the standard room ;)) and quiet musty. Especially the bathroom didn't seem so clean.
During my first morning they shut down the electricity of my room (without prior notice) because they were carrying out maintenance. I was planning on going to the beach anyway, but the way they did this, wasn't polite.
The biggest problem was that the reception was unattended for almost my entire stay (3 nights). The general manager was very friendly but not around so much. The rest of the staff that was around, was hard to find and did not respond to the bell at the reception (probably because they couldn't hear it). They were very friendly as well, but communication failed (I don't speak Bahasa....). I wasn't able to arrange the things I wanted, for example renting a bike, it was only one day later that someone could attend me. I actually felt abandoned here. I was one of the fee guests and I felt a bit like a gost building. Maybe it was because they just hosted the students of the yoga teacher training and they were having a break, but then don't take in guests!
Breakfast in Bali most of the times is a bliss, but at the Kolonial House it was more than basic (yoghurt with some muesli and fruit, served in your room).
The bike (push bike) I rented was fun, but don't expect much (as it was only 20k per day).
There are several wifi signals at the property, however none of them was solid enough to do some stuff like money transfers.
Two days before I left, I asked the general manager to arrange transport to the airport. The next day she confirmed. I was being picked up the next day at 8am.
The day I left, I looked for a staff member at around 7.15am for breakfast (they serve it between 7am and 11am), however I couldn't find anyone in the entire property! It was only at 7.30am I saw someone, turned out to be the owner, staying in one of the rooms. He showed me were I could make breakfast and asked me if I would mind helping myself. So a little stressed out because I was also packing my bags to catch the flight, but all allright.
Then.. the driver never showed up. It was the owner who helped me out, first calling the general manager (and she called the driver, first she said that he was on his way, then 5 minutes later saying she couldn't reach him...) and then the owner insisted the staff would call a taxi. The staff members, that turned up after 8am (!!), were hesitating at first to call a taxi, I think it might be because they know the driver and didn't want to pass him. But finally they made the call. Then the taxi was also trying to charge me more than I would have payed to the other driver.. which was already way more than a taxi would normally cost. In the end I made it to catch the plane, but it felt bad ending my amazing trip to Bali like this.
If it wasn't for the helpful owner I would have rated even lower. It wasn't a warm stay like in almost all other places i have stayed in Bali. The place itself had potential, caring a bit more for the guests would help a lot!

I stayed here during my yoga teacher training, which I did at Power of Now Oasis. It was an amazing experience. The staff at kolonial house are very friendly and helpful. My room was the standard room which was great for my 5 week stay. I enjoyed the use of the community kitchen, although i found it was cheaper to eat out. I am going to return in October and I will definitely be staying here :)
