The guest is god at Akshay

There’s a phrase in Indian hospitality: Atithi Devo Bhava — “The guest is god.”
Akshay treated me like a goddess.
They offered me a beautiful room at a generous price and truly tended to every need. I caught a small bug during my stay; when I didn’t emerge from my room for a day, they quietly sent someone to check on me. That kind of care is rare.
The staff helped with everything — finding supplies, giving directions, arranging my taxi to the airport. They refilled my water bottles daily, sparing me from contributing more plastic to the world. Everyone greeted me with a warm smile and a gentle “How are you, madam?” and I felt cared for in every way.
My room was spacious and lovely, with an excellent air conditioner. There was a little fridge, and they brought me a kettle and a mug for my essential predawn coffee. Nothing I asked for was ever refused. I felt truly welcomed here.
And the patio — I loved that space. It sits right above the street, so there’s a steady flow of life passing by, but I was tucked behind a railing and plants, mostly shielded from view. It gave me the rare pleasure of being on my own while still feeling connected to the pulse of Varkala. I spent so many hours there writing, sipping tea, and taking in the world.
The beach is just a short walk down a lively lane full of shops and cafés. Varkala has many dogs, and while that can sometimes be hard to witness, the dogs here are cared for. I watched a team feeding the beach dogs, making sure the shy ones weren’t pushed aside. It told me a lot about the heart of this place.
Varkala Beach is rich with culture, tradition, and spirituality. I’ve loved my time here and am truly sad to be leaving tomorrow.
Come to Varkala. Stay at Akshay. It’s a place where kindness is a daily ritual, and guests are treated with genuine devotion.

The worst

I booked the hotel online and they even took the payment online. I reached the place after a long tiring drive and reached to find out, they don't even allow us to wear our own slippers, and the bathroom was also so unclean and neither was there any bathroom slippers. This is the worst experience, no slippers even in the reception, and there is also no staff to take your luggage in a long and high stairs. This is the worst hotel ever. Never visit.

Handy guesthouse with choice of rooms

On various levels, up some steps, this little budget hotel packs in rooms from 600 to 1500 rupees a night, for which latter price you can get aircon, a balcony and a large room. The WiFi is good and the restaurant downstairs fronts the main road and is useful if you don’t want to walk far. Papanasam beach with its seafood restaurants and some shops is just a few minutes walk away, on the flat. The manager Shibu is helpful and answers emails. Good value.

Great Yoga classes with Anoop

I did not stay at Akshay but attended the morning yoga classes with Anoop the resident teacher. I am a yoga teacher myself in the UK with wide experience of different teachers. I can thoroughly recommend these classes. I tried others during my 5 week stay in varkala and these were the best by far. Clear instruction, great flow of postures with a very professional edge. The restaurant also serves great dosa for after class breakfast. Highly recommended by a seasoned traveller of India.
