Lovely, charming, converted old residence

A charming place converted tastefully from an old residence with rooms around peaceful courtyards. Well, it would be peaceful because we were the only people there ! Everything in the bedroom and bathroom worked perfectly and the room was simple but comfortable. Staff fell over themselves to be helpful. Excellent food with an impressive choice given the lack of guests. A few more people around us would have been nice but we were out of season. Having dropped in at other Badami hotels during our visit (for lunch, loo stops etc) we were absolutely delighted with the choice we had made. Aihole is a little apart from Badami and Pattardakal but well worth the short journey.

Extremely Charming Architecture With Room For improvement

Very beautiful layout with a lot of potential, but some serious improvements are required. The concept of the hotel is fantastic and it showcases Chalukyan architectural heritage of the local area superbly. At night the ambience is divine. However to receive a 5 star rating a place needs to be perfect and it was not. When I arrived and checked into my room I realised there were gaps at the edges of the curtains which compromised privacy as did small gaps around the entry door. The curtain material is synthetic and collected heat during the very hot afternoons. The AC was not powerful enough. I checked in, proceeded to have a shower, but in the middle was interrupted by room service offering me soap. They did provide a very fast ironing service which was helpful. The food was good, but I was not offered fruit juice, which is something I always look forward to when traveling. There is nothing more annoying then being the only person in a restaurant and having someone watching you eat, while they fail to do things like bring you something to clean your hand, or to open water and pour it for you when they can see you struggling, or not getting the order right. The food items I wanted on the menu were not available due to the season, so this was disappointing. I really appreciated the menu was vegetarian. This is a good move and more hotels should encourage this.
Possibly the biggest let down was the hotel organising taxis. This seems to be a common theme at some hotels who charge exorbitant rates for fares. They did not let me know prices until the last minute, so that I was left with no choice but to go with their recommendation given the remoteness of Aihole. I paid Rs 17000 for a trip that should have been Rs 8000, far more than an airfare I paid from Chennai to Mysore. On the day of sightseeing a fare that started out as Rs4000 ended up being Rs7000 in a car that was old and cramped. I will say the driver was professional, so at least that was good. Lots of excuses were made regarding the high fares. I was told I could pay with card, but was then told I would have to pay cash and was not given a receipt. This is far from 5 star behaviour overall the hotel will need to do better.
I would still recommend staying here due to the situation of the hotel in the local village that houses several key monuments. A walk through the village is a recommended experience to those wanting to see what rural village life is like. There are over 100 significant archeologic monuments in the area. The Manager told me I only needed to see the 6 -8 main ones. As a researcher and writer I find this lack of interest of local people towards their own heritage sad as there is vast archeologic treasure to explore, but much is not celebrated and abandoned due to this attitude.

Great food, in the middle of a lost village...

New and cozy room (no fridge), small very pleasant classes in the evening. Dinner at the restaurant: obligatory, a vegetable dish is sufficient. Breakfast served at the table with local fruits and specialties, but we asked for eggs and coffee pudding. The food seemed good to us.
Of course, it’s a golden prison, close to poverty...

Unique heritage stay

Stayed here for two nights on our South India Tour. The location is in the middle of a small village which wakes early! The building itself is a beautiful renovation of a heritage building.Full of little alleyways and narrow stairs. Staying here feels rather like being in a fort with the massive walls surrounding the property. The rooms are simply but tastefully and authentically decorated. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Someone will turn up at your room around 6 pm to take your dinner menu which is cooked to demand. I am not sure if that is always the case but during our stay there were only 8 guests on the first night and 2 on the second. So this is much less wasteful than providing a buffet. The food was very tasty and very plentiful. Also really enjoy the breakfasts where a highlight was the hotel spicy omelet. The hotel is excellently located for the temples in Aihole and if you were inclined you could walk to these, after negotiating the local bullocks outside the main entrance!
