Lovely Auberge

The auberge is a lovely little hotel in the small, beautiful village of Puycelsi in the Tarn department, a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The auberge is built on the site of an 18th- century inn, incorporating original architectural elements, with all modern comforts. Greg and Sophie are an adorable couple who will welcome you warmly. (The photo on the website does not do justice to their lively and engaging personalities.) Half-board is offered on request. Greg is the chef and Sophie has more experience with English. Communication was easy even with our limited French. When I left a pair of trousers behind, Sophie had them packed up and mailed to me swiftly.
On their square is the small boulangerie/épicerie that provides the village with daily fresh bread that Greg sources for his breakfasts, and the village church whose bell tolls the hour. We were there in October as a peaceful interlude from our vacation, and enjoyed the tranquil pace of village life and the chance to visit surrounding areas like Bruniquel. The village is at a high elevation with a commanding view over the idyllic countryside but it is flat and easily walked. This was a sweet and cherished part of our trip to France. Merci, Greg and Sophie! We hope to return!

Nothing ancient about this meal, a triumph.

We just ate a most wonderful, delicious and inventive meal at the auberge. The courgette and scrachiatelli chilled soup was gentle, beautifully refreshing and the odd spot of balsamic vinegar gave it a perfect tang. The cod, tomato base and aubergines main course was a balance of gentle tastes and with the chevre on the aubergines was really very tasty. Finally the peach tarte was delicious, soft peaches with almonds on a biscuity base.
Personal service was a bonus.
Thank you a wonderful meal. We already booked again!

A dream holiday

We loved this hotel, located in a very nice village. Welcoming Greg and Sophie is very warm, they are amazingly kind and their cuisine is delicious. Our room was also very comfortable and very clean.

Very pleasant discovery in a very beautiful region

This hotel run by a friendly and welcoming couple Greg and Sophie is located in a very nice village. The room is tastefully decorated. The evening meal cooked by Greg is delicious, as are the pastries made by Sophie.

Disappointed before you could even sleep there

We had spotted L’Ancienne Auberge during a walk in the village and wanted to book a night there, seduced by the setting and good reviews. Unfortunately, the Welcoming on site clearly discouraged us.
Upon arrival, we were received in a cold and unkind way, with the impression of disturbing. No heat, no effort to inform us or just welcome us properly. This lack of consideration made us turn back and we went to another place.
It’s a shame, because the place seemed enchanting to spend a few nights, but when choosing a place, the first contact counts as much as what is in the plate or frame. We preferred to eat elsewhere, where the Welcoming was equal (the wild shed and the Jardin des Lilys) and find a lodging.
