A beutiful peaceful hideaway in the hills

We had the most amazing time staying at L'Alivu, it is such a lovely relaxing place to stay - the views from the hotel are incredible, the pool is fantastic, the rooms are clean and comfy, and the service was excellent.
We stayed for a week in August and wanted a bit of peace and quiet but somewhere where we could drive around and explore the area - L'Alivu was ideal.
The highlight for us would have to be the service - Michelle and Christian are such good hosts - they reccomended restaurants, walking routes, places to visit and were more than happy to help with anything (including providing a jug of Rose to enjoy by the pool in the sunshine!).
Breakfast is served by the pool and we didn't ever manage to finish all the lovely bread, croissants etc! Even better was the evening meal which I would highly reccomend - the food (cooked by Michelle) and was traditional french food, delicious and really good value.
It is a beautiful little place hidden away down a (very) long winding path which is really the only disadvantage of staying here - everything else was just perfect. We will be going back!

Not available for walkers

This gite d'etape is not available for walkers in august, because is full of families with cars. We were calling all the morning for booking our beds, but the phone answered a message that until 17.00 they don't answer calls. We keep walking our route and when arrived to Serriera, the owner told us that there weren't available beds because the lodge was full.
The randonneers need places for staying, but if the lodge is full of people not randonneer and the owner don't answer the phone, we have to sleep in the street or the field.

Terrifying Drive spoilt our holiday!

This place is at the top of a mountain, and the setting is beautiful however it very difficult to find and the drive is horrendous. The final part of the drive is down a very narrow unmade up road with sheer drops. If you don't like hairpin bends and heights don't even think about it. You really do take your life in your hands. When you get there you realise there is nothing around and nowhere to eat and so it is another terrifying 20 minute drive back down the mountain to find food at the nearest town Contes which is unattractive . Although it was possible to order supper at the hotel our experience was very bad. The meal was the worst and most expensive we had in France. It was very poor the cheapest of ingredients no meat, no fish, burnt shop pizza, tinned mandarin oranges and ice cream and at 32 Euros a person very expensive. The host and hostess kept disappearing around the corner to smoke during the meal and sat and ate different food to us. To be honest the the meal was a joke - a real rip off. Don't use this place to tour the area as it is too difficult to get to.

The kingdom of far far away!

When we chose L'Alivu for a 2 night stay, we ignored some reviews that said that L'Alivu was in the end of the world and the road was a bit windy... Well, it's not a bit windy, it's a real tornado; it has no illumination and it's very narrow even for one car!!
Although being "only" 26 km to Nice, we took around 40 minutes to get into the civilization (and we have a really nice car)!!
The day we went to L'Alivu we had a setback that only allowed us to arrive at 9.40pm, atfer a 400km travel. As we knew that we're arrinving late and the localisation of the house was not quite central to facilities, we emailed L'Alivu in order to sorry us for the boredom and to make sure the dinner would be booked. However, when we arrived, after a tornado experience in the road, we were told that it was too late and the kitchen was already closed. We asked for a toast, but even that was denied! The only thing we could get was the so typical (and so annoying) answer: "Désolée"
So, we went all the way back through the long, windy and dark road towards Nice to get something to eat. 40 minutes to go, other 40 minutes to come back... plus nauseas as reward.
Despite all these situations, the house has a great view for the green mountain and the breakfast was fair enough. If you are planning to visit the surroundings, such as Nice and the coast, I would not recommend it as you will need to drive a lot. Still, for a hideaway vacation in the country where there is nothing to do but relax, it is a reasonable choice.

Wonderful experience

My first five on Trip Advisor!
I cannot say enough good things about Michèle and Christian. L’Alivu was wonderful! Everything was great. Our room was L’Oliviere- it was decorated in warm yellow colors and was very welcoming. Our door opened up to the guest terrace, and we had French doors with real shutters (which I thought was so cool). I am posting a couple of pics, but the pics on their website are very accurate.
The location was perfect- not only was the house the last one on a quiet road near a very small town, but it was also close to amazing walks and hikes. We were looking for peace and quiet and found it here! Our second day Christian recommended the most amazing hike for us to a chapel and abandoned village at the top of a mountain. I am a hiking newbie, and now I am hooked. Luckily, we came home to a fabulous meal after a strenuous day!
We ate both nights at L’Alivu, which I can only recommend. Local wine and products from the garden were wonderful! My personal fav was the apricot tart…sigh… For breakfast there was also marmalades made from fruit from the garden. Our first morning it was even warm enough to sit out on the terrace for breakfast- amazing!
My only regret is that we were there in April, and it wasn’t quite warm enough to take advantage of the pool and Jacuzzi. I would love to go back in summer and do nothing but hike all day and spend evenings on the terrace overlooking the nature preserve across the way.
Michèle and Christian were unendlessly patient with our elementary French, and I think I got in some great practice during the dinners. They were really fabulous hosts. They both also know the area very well, so they can give you lots of great day trips.
There is so much to see in the area if you like being outside. I wish we had had more than two days there! I also recommend visiting the Tourist Office- we picked up some delish local olives, olive oil and tapenade.
We thought Coaraze was great and L’Alivu was too!
