Creepy presumably racist staff, women and people of color beware

There is no one at the reception desk. Staff hangs out in the room marked PRIVE on the second floor. As I was going up the stairs on the evening of May 27, 2016 I was YELLED at by a creepy scary looking bearded man demanding my room number. I did my best to say the number in French. He said it is not possible. I got the key out and showed it to him. He kept being really rude. Like, you know I just randomly walked in a hotel for no reason! Later, a friend was picking me up, and the scary looking staff did not let him in the hotel. At all, not even in the lobby! He came over all the way to the top floor to knock on my door to tell me "the dude can't come in, it's prohibited". What the what? I assume this was because of my friend's skin color. Welcome to racist France, I heard so much about it! This is certainly not about security - about midnight, another knock on the door - some random guy is asking for a lighter! Early in the morning, as I was leaving, the same creepy staff RAN out of his PRIVE room after me, SCREAMING "Madam! Thirty Euros! Madam! Thirty Euros!". I guess he wanted me to pay for the room. I said that I am not checking out yet and will come back. He wanted the money NOW, because HE was leaving. OK. He put the 30 Euros in his pocket and started to walk away! I demanded a receipt. He said, "My colleague will give it to you later". Huh? I said, "You put my cash in your pocket, YOU give me a receipt".(Good luck to those travelers not speaking French.) Very unwillingly he went into his PRIVE room. It took forever. There, he BARKED at me "Carte!" (A normal hotel staff would have said "May I have your ID please"). And when he saw my American passport he suddenly broke into a smile! A miracle! And started flirting and making small talk! I can not believe this! I am making an educated guess that I also got discriminated because of my appearance and presumed nationality. The "receipt" has scribbled dates, two hotel address stamps and nothing else. You cant tell who it's by. I AM SO DISGUSTED BY THIS PERSON AND HIS ATTITUDE. It completely spoiled my trip to Marseille which I love dearly. And oh yeah, the shared toilet did not have any toilet paper for two days. And yes, I searched for the license for this hotel and did not find it.

Good hostel for just spending the night

The room looked like it could use a renovation. Broken floor tiles, worn off bathroom... Wifi was good at times but unreliable (disconnecting often). However, the bed linen was crispy clean. The staff on the reception was always nice and location was very convenient. It is in short walking distance from both the train station and the Vieux Port, so we were able to make day trips as well as city sightseeing very conveniently.

Badly advertised; badly run.

So we arrived quite late in Marseille- around 10pm. We looked forward to getting to our hotel, both because we were tired and because there were a lot of suspicious people asking us for drugs near the station. When we arrived, we firstly had to wait for the manager to be shouted out of his bedroom by another guest who was outside smoking. After an awkward wait, he arrived. We checked in and he advised us of some 'works' going on on the staircase. They were in the middle of retiling, and we were on the third/top floor, and had to meander our way through some messy workmanship.
Our room was terrible: the floor had about 10 ants crawling aroud, there was no air con, and there were electric fittings just hanging off the wall- no bulbs and the like. The room was stifling, but we got on with it because it was late. Both nights, we had very little sleep- we couldn't bear to touch the dirty walls with our feet nor sleep with our heads at the wall/window end of the bed. There was a fan that was so dirty we were worried to switch it on, and the TV just didn't work. We grinned and got through knowing we only had 2 nights there.
We described the area as 'rough'. It was ok providing you didn't look anyone in the eye...
Honestly... we were on a budget but there's a line! Don't book here is all I can say.
