Enchanted interlude
We have just experienced an enchanted interlude in a charming setting!
We spent a timeless night in this absolutely sublime charming establishment.
Upon arrival, one is transported by the beauty of the residence and its park, a soothing atmosphere where nature and tranquility reign supreme.
Our host was simply adorable. I want to emphasize her kindness and professionalism: she paid special attention to my food intolerances during breakfast, which is not always easy to manage.
A huge thank you for this thoughtfulness that made our stay peaceful.
The little extras that make all the difference:
• The four-legged host: Special mention to the house dog, an absolutely charming and very welcoming "host with fur"!
• The wise advice: We loved the recommendations for local visits and good restaurants nearby. The advice was excellent and allowed us to discover hidden gems in the area.
• The setting: Between the carefully curated decor, the comfort of the room, and the royal breakfast served in a sunlit room, everything was perfect.
If you are looking for an authentic, warm, and refined place, do not hesitate for a second.
We will return with immense pleasure!

Paradise down here
We had a heavenly stay. The dynamism of the hostess to find us a good restaurant and places to visit helped us well.
The house is very nice and the calm rock reigns there.
It's impossible not to be happy.
The sun was there.

AMAZED!!!!
As you enter the gates an impressive long drive with beautiful grounds left us excited to arrive for five nights at what appeared to be a beautiful historic villa, hopefully filled with charm.
Wow!!!! On entering the property we were informed of a “no key, no lock” policy. This left us concerned that our belongings in our room would be completely unsecured. On entering our room I had to return downstairs to ask the host if there was any hanging space. The “cupboard” she showed me, only one side available was completely unfit for purpose. To our horror, we discovered a sign on our toilet wall asking us to refrain from flushing the toilet between 11pm and 8am. Had we been informed of this before hand we certainly would not have booked this property. Besides being unpleasant this is totally unhygienic. The bathroom had been divided into a separate toilet/bathroom to enable a shower to be fitted. Problem being the wall did not go to the ceiling so my husband could wave to me whilst in the toilet. No privacy. The bathroom window was very large, clear glass, no cover/blind, so anyone in the garden would be able to look up and see you in the shower until it steamed up. The wooden windows and balcony were rotting so we cautiously went off the balcony a bit sharpish!!
Large amounts of dust under the radiator being propped up with a piece of wood and cobwebs on the wall light which was not out of reach to clean. We were woken about 4.30am by the family dog barking, a blind in the room was not blackout so consequently from then on we were awake.
When we got to breakfast there was a pot of coffee on the table waiting for us, we are tea drinkers so had to ask for tea. The coffee pot was extremely stained with drips of old coffee, a croissant each, 3 small pots of home made jam, we wouldn’t dream of eating, 7 strawberries with wilting stalks to share. I had to cut the bad bits off. There were two glass jars of home made yoghurt, to my horror, I could see mould through the jar. All we ate was the croissant and the two shop bought yoghurts that were there.
We arrived about 6.30pm the previous night, were there less than two hours and decided this was not a place for us. We unpacked minimal things, and left before 9am after just one night. It was shocking.

Hello, thank-you for taking the time to write a critic in which I do not recognize our house at all.
First of all, we do our very best to welcome our guests like good friends in our family house. We try to make our guests stays as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. We are an “old fashioned” bed and breakfast in the way that our guests are not considered as clients. Therefore, we are in total trust and keys are not needed. Security is assured by a closed and locked gate at the entrance of the driveway with a security code as well as the main entrance door. We moreover have a secured safe at disposal for any valuables. Our house is a historic old house situated between two domanial forests of 14 000 hectares in front of the house and 5 000 just behind and no neighbors visible, only an ocean of trees…Therefore, nobody can see you in your bathroom even if you do not close the shutters. Many guests enjoy the view while taking their shower! A hot-air balloon that sometimes flies above the river, if they have a telescope, could be the only ones to be able to take a peep!! We deliberately chose to separate the toilets from the rest of the bathroom for more intimacy but leaving some space so that natural light can come through and preserve the mouldings of the ceiling. Léo Delibes, the composer of Lakmé and Coppélia asked Jean Girette to build his house in the shape of piano, this architect was Charles Garnier’s associate, they worked together on the Opera of Paris (that is how he met Delibes because the first ballet played at le Opera Garnier was a ballet composed by Delibes). I believe he was more specialized in opera houses than villas and at a time where modern needs of intimacy were not so important, he forgot to include in the bathrooms private toilets for each. We unfortunately could not install them with normal large pipes because they would have gone right down in the middle of the living room! Therefore, we chose to put watermatics with a discreet evacuation system but they are unfortunately as noisy as they are efficient, so we do ask our guests to be careful not to flush them in the middle of the night. It is a small inconvenience, but we preferred to have a toilet per bathroom than a shared common one for all our guests.
Like all old houses there are cracks and flaws, we totally dedicate our time and energy to the restoration of the house to its splendor like in the years Léo Delibes lived in it. Although the balcony of your room was not at risk, it did need to be restored. This summer we engaged a huge campaign of restoration of all the balconies and exterior woodwork.
Your close-up photos of tiny details make everything dramatic. Such as a thread of a cobweb in the light. In a country house so close to the forest, spiders can be Olympic champions and rebuild their cobwebs in less than a few hours after we have cleaned them away. As for the barking dog, it could not be ours… Tokyo sleeps in the closed kitchen which is an extension at the far end of the house, opposite from the bedroom in which you were staying. There are many wild animals such as foxes, badgers, deer, boars… maybe a dog from a distant neighboring house spotted the intrusion of a wild animal. Since there is no trafic noise, church bells, distant barking or the very numerous birds such as owls can be heard more distincly. The famous Flower Duet of the opera Lakmé, composed by Léo Delibes says in the first phrase "les oiseaux tapageurs" the "nosy birds". In the spring, I garantee that a complete orchestra of birds are still here, singing just like Léo Delibes heard them... In the summer, we are lucky to have long days, therefore the sun comes up quite early, you could have closed the opaque metal shutters if you wanted to keep the daylight out.
You didn’t have to ask for tea because I am the one who offered it to you. 90% of our guests prefer coffee, so I always prepare it in advance. I ask my guests each time if they also want tea and a fresh pressed orange juice. I prepare on demand so that the water is nice and hot.
As for the real problem which is the yoghurt with mold, I am truly sorry it had to be on you out of all our guests! Home-made yoghurts sometimes accidently develop natural mold like cheese even though it is a fresh batch. It is not very appetizing, I agree. A normal guest would have asked very simply for a replacement and I would have apologized immediately. But you preferred to say nothing and shame us on the internet.
You had decided to leave the next morning only 2 hours after your arrival. You did not ask for arrangements so that I could make your stay as nice as possible and try to meet your expectations. I am sorry you spent your few hours with us tracking down all the small defaults of an old house with its original and authentic elements of architecture and decoration. I am sorry that a tiny little coffee stain, almost invisible without a lens made your stay a nightmare. I understand that you preferred to cancel your week with us and to choose instead a standard and clinical business hotel that most certainly is more your style of ideal holidays.

This was a highlight of our 2-week trip to France. The chatelet and property are just beautiful, and, as a musician, the history of the property was just magical. The host is so welcoming and generous with her advice about local attractions. She made us dinner reservations at a charming bistro that was the best meal of our trip, and sent us on the most wonderful local drive. Breakfast was perfect. If you are near Compiegne, you won’t regret a night or 2 or 3 at the Villa du Chatelet.

This venue is truly a family home. The family lives in and runs the Villa. They were lovely hosts. The villa itself is a historic home and the family offered us the chance to read about its history, which made our stay even more memorable. If I am ever in this area again, it would be a place I would gladly return to.
