Surprisingly modern with a top-class breakfast.

From the outside, the Hotel Arkipelag is certainly not an architectural beauty and seems more functional than inviting. The rest of the stay was all the more positively surprising.
The service was consistently warm and attentive. The rooms are modernly furnished and the bathrooms with their stylish brass fixtures give the whole thing a high-quality and special character.
Another highlight is the beautiful outdoor pool, which offers enough space to relax and really invites you to linger on warm days.
The absolute highlight of our stay, however, was the breakfast. The selection is rich, fresh, and typically Nordic: various fish specialties, including delicious salmon, plus high-quality ingredients, fresh products, and delicious smoothie shots. This is exactly how one imagines a successful start to the day.
A hotel that looks inconspicuous from the outside, but convinces on the inside with comfort, hospitality, and an excellent breakfast. Gladly again!

Don’t Stay

Hotel is awful. Rooms tiny, twin beds worse than camp. Sea view with balcony is a huge joke. You basically look out on a roof. Balcony is peeling concrete. Thank goodness we are here for only a night. Outward appearance of hotel is worse.
Bathroom not clean and dark enough to hide all the funk.
Upsetting because hotel pictures are nothing like real life. Stay somewhere else!

More 3 stars than 4 stars. Clean. Limited service.

I stayed at Hotell Arkipelag during a recent visit to Åland. It is probably one of the better, if not the best, hotel options on the islands, particularly in the capital of Mariehamn.
The location is unquestionably excellent. The hotel sits directly across from the recreational harbor, is within easy walking distance of restaurants, museums, shops, and most attractions in Mariehamn, and is only a short drive from the ferry terminal serving Sweden and mainland Finland.
The hotel itself is a bit mixed. It occupies a large early 1970s building that has clearly undergone numerous renovations over the years. The exterior is showing its age and could benefit from fresh paint and general refurbishment, while the interior has been updated more recently. The property markets itself as a 4-star hotel, though I think that rating is somewhat generous. In terms of service and operating standards, it felt closer to a 3-star Holiday Inn or Ibis Styles than a 4-star Sheraton, Swissôtel, or Radisson Blu.
The guestrooms have clearly received significant investment. The furnishings are modern, the rooms are attractive, and the bathrooms have been renovated. Unfortunately, some practical details seem to have been overlooked. There were not enough conveniently accessible electrical or USB outlets. The bed consisted of two twin mattresses pushed together, which inevitably separated during the night and created an uncomfortable gap. The linens and pillows felt inexpensive and were not comfortable.
The bathroom was spacious and featured a large walk-in shower, but the design was flawed. Because there is no glass enclosure or curtain, water inevitably sprays everywhere. Basic toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and soap were provided through wall-mounted dispensers,. At a hotel claiming 4-star status, I would expect amenities such as bar soap, a dental kit, mouthwash, or a shaving kit. When I inquired about mouthwash and a shaving kit, I was told they were available only for purchase. Charging for toiletries that most hotels provide for free struck me as cheap. While the hotel featured a mini-bar, the mini-bar was unstocked. No bottled water is provided.
The hotel's layout is also rather odd. Moving between guest rooms, the breakfast room, and the bar/restaurant often requires using different elevators and staircases. It feels like decades of additions and renovations created a somewhat confusing floor plan.
The advertised gym is essentially nonexistent. It consisted of a treadmill and stationary bike placed in the middle of a basement lounge area. Likewise, the hotel promotes a sauna, but it operates only during limited hours. For many guests, it may as well not exist.
Breakfast was extensive. However, the buffet selection never changed during my stay. Everything was entirely self-service. There were no staff available to prepare eggs to order or provide any additional breakfast service.
The hotel's restaurant and bar were disappointing. Prices were extremely high, especially considering the quality. Better food and equally good drinks can be found within a short walk of the hotel for less money. It was telling that the restaurant and bar were nearly empty every evening during my stay.
One area where the hotel deserves praise is housekeeping. Housekeepers serviced the room every daily. They did an excellent job keeping the room clean and well maintained.
Overall, Hotell Arkipelag is below international 4-star standards but is probably about average by Åland standards, where, admittedly, hotel options are limited. If I'm being completely honest, the property's biggest challenge is the fact that it is an aging and somewhat awkwardly designed building, despite the renovations. The exterior needs attention, the grounds could use better upkeep, and many of the hotel's quirks stem from the limitations of the original structure.
Would I stay here again? Probably, because the location is excellent and there are few alternatives. But travelers arriving with expectations of a modern international 4-star hotel should temper those expectations accordingly.

The reception service can be improved. I asked the lady (with glasses; medium length straight hair) to make a duplicate key, she threw it on the counter with no smile and eye contact, which was very rude, though when I asked her why she did this to me later, she apologised, saying she did not mean it. The room was refurbished and clean, but providing basic amenities upon request would be helpful, such as shower cap and cotton buds (there was none upon request).

Nice, fresh and tasty

Nice and fresh. Nice room with sea view. Very friendly staff. Had French seafood stew in the restaurant which was the best food I had in a long time.
