Old old resort not a gold star

Well we checked in in friday around 3pm note on door said that no employees til 4pm the good room was clean , plenty of space, bed was comfortable , tv was good size and kitchen was good size .The bad let me say this thers no air conditioning at all in the entire building including the restaurant, hardly any staff , if your a skier its right at Canon easy access, Pool is good size and clean .This is an old resort around 75 years old you definitely walk back in time .This isnt a gold star resort by no means .

Great location

The location was perfect if you are looking to experience the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The facility was quaint, but in need of updating while keeping the charm. It needed be be thoroughly cleaned. The rooms were decent in size and there was no noise to complain about.

Love Mittersill Resort

We love staying at Mittersill in the winter to ski. The Resort is older but was very clean. It is in this cute Alpine Village. Lots of amenities for families. Game room and pool is great for kids. Baron's pub is perfect for adults but they also have things for kids. It is nice to have this in case it is snowing out and you don't want to drive anywhere for food. Gave sleep quality average as the pillows could be better. Forgot to bring my own. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit with a fabulous view of the mountain. It is perfect size for 4 or 6 people. Can't wait to stay here again.

A Nostalgic Solo Adventure at the Historic Mittersill – Like Stepping Back in Time

I just wrapped up a magical Christmas week at the old Mittersill Alpine Resort at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire, and I have to say, it felt like I'd been transported to a bygone era of skiing. If you're looking for a quiet, uncrowded spot with heaps of character, this place is a hidden gem. I booked it on a whim for some solo skiing, and it exceeded all expectations – though not without a dramatic twist on my last day. Here's my detailed rundown of the experience.
From the moment I arrived, the resort's vintage vibe hit me hard. Pulling up to the Tyrolean-style buildings with their steep roofs and wooden accents, it was like entering a time capsule from the 1940s or '50s. The check-in was seamless; the staff greeted me warmly, and since it was mid-week over Christmas (December 22-27, 2025), I quickly realized I might be the only guest in the entire hotel. Yes, you read that right – the whole place to myself! No lines, no noise, just pure serenity. It was eerie at first, but in the best way possible, like having a private mountain retreat.
My room was cozy and retro-chic, with wooden furnishings, plush bedding, and views of the snow-covered peaks. It wasn't ultra-modern – think classic alpine lodge rather than sleek luxury – but it had all the essentials: a comfortable bed, en-suite bathroom, and even a small balcony to watch the flurries fall. The heating worked like a charm against the New Hampshire chill, and the Wi-Fi was very reliable for streaming holiday movies after a day on the slopes.
Skiing was the main draw, and Mittersill delivered. With direct access to Cannon Mountain's trails, The conditions were decent for late December – fresh powder from a recent storm made for exhilarating runs on the expert Mittersill terrain. I spent mornings tackling the ungroomed backcountry-style trails, which felt adventurous and untouched. Afternoons were for cruising the groomers. Cannon's aerial tramway is a highlight; riding it up gave panoramic views of Franconia Notch that were breathtaking, especially with the holiday lights twinkling below. As the only guest, I had the slopes practically to myself early in the day – talk about a skier's dream!
The indoor pool and spa were absolute standouts. After skiing, I'd head straight there to unwind. The pool is spacious and heated, with that old-school charm – think tiled floors and mural-painted walls evoking Austrian Alps. I swam laps in complete solitude, followed by a soak in the hot tub. The spa area includes saunas and basic treatments, and it all felt wonderfully restorative. No crowds meant I could linger as long as I wanted, turning it into my personal wellness sanctuary.
Dining was simple but satisfying. The on-site pub served hearty meals with a nod to the resort's Austrian roots – I enjoyed wiener schnitzel one night and a classic New England clam chowder another. Since I was alone, the staff often chatted with me, sharing stories about the resort's history (like its founding by an Austrian baron). They were incredibly friendly and attentive, making me feel like a VIP rather than a lone traveler.
The staff's helpfulness shone brightest on my last day. As I was packing up to leave, disaster struck: someone slid on the slick, icy roads and smashed into my parked truck in the lot. It was a fender-bender, but startling nonetheless – the roads were treacherous after an overnight freeze. I rushed out, and before I could even process it, the resort staff was there. They calmed me down, helped assess the damage, and immediately called the local Franconia police for a report. One employee even brought me hot cocoa while we waited for the officers. The police arrived promptly, and everything was handled professionally. The staff's quick response turned a stressful situation into a manageable one. It really highlighted their genuine hospitality. The Franconia police department was very helpful and friendly.
Overall, Mittersill is perfect if you crave nostalgia and solitude. It's not for those seeking nightlife or high-end amenities – there's no fancy gym or bustling bar scene – but that's part of its appeal. At around $200-300 per night during peak season, it's a steal for the privacy and access. I'd rate it 5/5 for the unique experience. If you're okay with stepping back in time, book it – just watch those icy roads!
Pros: Friendly staff, private feel, great skiing access, wonderful pool/spa.
Cons: Can feel isolated if you're not into solitude; basic amenities.
Would I return? Absolutely, maybe with friends next time to share the charm.
