Off the beaten track - literally

This is a renovated traditional farm - cortijo - with guest rooms in a purpose built extension, all with flat roofs and set in gardens furnished with drought tolerant planting. (It was photos of the gardens that first caught my eye - this is a semi-desert region and lush lawns and water demanding plants are a drain on precious water supplies, and offensive to my eye - OK I'm a bit eccentric here...
We had the 'blue' room. Small inside (apparently planning restrictions applied to the modern extension), with a comfortable double bed, and a small table and stools. We needed to be well organised to open both our small suitcases! The wash basin was also in the room (with delicious geranium scented soap - must try to track that down...). The shower and WC were in a tiny separate room. But all the rooms have their own terrace with table and chairs facing the garden/surrounding landscape, so there is no feeling of being cramped.
Guests are able to make use of the communal kitchen to prepare evening meals, and this is also where breakfast is served; an ample spread of everything you can imagine - breads, cakes, ham, cheeses, fruit, .... crepes if you wish... fresh juice, tea, coffee... and advice from the hosts on how to fill your day.
The only down for us was the lack of any restaurant within walking distance. It is several km back to the nearest village (Albaricoque), most of it on unsurfaced road, where the restaurant was closed. Also closed in Pozo... we ended up back in San Jose. If we came again we would perhaps come equipped with food to cook ourselves.
The surroundings are stunning if you like unusual landscapes - I do. The 'garden' just flows into the surrounding fields scattered with statuesque agaves and prickly pears. There are interesting traditional water storage cisterns scattered among the farm buildings, starkly beautiful volcanic hills with walking trails, and at night the sky is dark and starry. (There is even a telescope on the flat roof). A paradise for landscape photographers, wildlife lovers, walkers...

Good potential, but beware!

The place was not difficult to find, we used google maps. The host was very nice, and we had a warm welcome. First of all the common kitchen area was free to use and had the equipment you would need to cook. Although, the place was cozy and felt like home, the thing that really dragged the whole experience down was the ant and fly invation that seemed to be neverending. It was ants EVERYWHERE, in the kitchen, in the cupboards, the rooms, on the walls and in the bed. It is understandable that this problem might be inevitable but the amount of insects everywhere was frightening and destroyed this hotels' potential. The facilities had a personal touch, it was possible to borrow bikes and the host knew the area very well and provided us with all the information we needed. There was a fan in the ceiling in every room but it worked poorly on spanish hot summerdays. The whole experience did not answer to the price per night. We could drive to the San Jose in 20 minutes passing by dozens of greenhouses for tomatoes. Theres a selection of restaurants in San Jose and beaches, five euros for parking to enter the beach monsul and genovese. Make sure you have some cash handy because you could not use credit cards in some restaurants. In conclusion, this is a hotel which makes you feel at home but it obvious that this includes the ants and flies aswell. If you are planning to visit this place, make sure to set off some time cleaning your suitcase and clothes for ants.

Better than we expected and in a great location!

We only stayed for a few nights but we were pleasantly surprised. Intially we had a few communication problems; but once we had arrived we realised what an amazing job the owners had done with El Campillo. The room was very clean and just the right size. There was a ventilator that kept the room cool. We did have a bit of bug problem, but the location makes up for that.
We were told about a trail that would take us to the nearest beach, as we had arrived late we took it and enjoyed it a lot. You even get to pass an old gold mine called San Diego! Annika made crepes for us on the last day and we got to know her better. She works very hard and you can not fault her dedication to her business. She was very nice showing our daughter the donkeys! We had an enjoyable trip which turned out to be much better than we expected. El Campillo is an ideal base for visiting the beaches and movie locations in the area.

A Beautiful and Restful Place to Stay

Annika and Martin are wonderful and caring hosts. The accommodation is really comfortable, quiet and set in the most stunning location in the Cabo de Gata. The food was delicious and very plentiful. Martin is an excellent guide for paragliding for the local sites around Andalucia. I had some stunning flights, particularly at Sierra Alhamilla, but there are many other wonderful flying sites too numerous to mention.
We stayed a week but wished to stay much longer. There is so much to see and do around the house. I am delighted to recommend this wonderful place to stay.

The beauty of Cabo de Gata

In a wonderful setting, at the edge of the mountains and out of sight of the greenhouses we found the Cortijo. Even though the welcome was quite difficult (we had to look and shout for fifteen minutes before someone heard us) we were touched by the warm personality of Anna.
The drive to Rodalquilar through the mountains is wonderful as you drive through the ancient gold mining area. But better don't try this after dusk...
Also beware, there's no internet, not Mobile phone coverage and thus no credit card. And the closest ATM is in Nijar or San José....
