A Very Disappointing Experience at Hotel Constanza, Barcelona
Unfortunately, our experience began uncomfortably at check-in.
My husband and I are an interracial couple; my husband is white and I am Black. During check-in, I felt that the interaction with the male front-desk employee was awkward and unwelcoming. There seemed to be a reluctance to make eye contact with me or engage with me normally. Even though my husband and I were standing there together and the employee had my identification, I was asked questions such as whether I was married and where I would be staying. Given that my husband was right beside me and we were checking into the hotel together, I found the interaction strange and uncomfortable.
I cannot say what motivated the employee's behavior, and I do not want to make an accusation that I cannot prove. I can only describe how the interaction felt to me. At the time, I tried not to read too much into it and proceeded with our stay.
Unfortunately, the room we were assigned created a much more serious concern.
Throughout our first night, there was an extremely strong chemical odor that smelled like bleach. Approximately every five to ten minutes, what appeared to be warm air or some type of vapor would come into the room, accompanied by this strong bleach-like smell.
It was so strong that I felt as though I was inhaling bleach. My throat became extremely irritated, and I found it difficult to breathe comfortably or sleep. I woke my husband because I was so concerned. At the same time, the room itself was extremely cold, while this periodic warm, chemical-smelling air continued to come through.
I even left the room to look around the area because I wondered whether we were next to a laundry room, kitchen, or some other facility that might explain the odor. I could not identify where it was coming from.
I barely slept that night.
What concerned me most was that this was not simply an issue of comfort or whether I liked the room. I was genuinely concerned about what I was breathing and whether remaining in that environment could affect my health.
First thing the following morning, my husband and I went to the front desk and reported what had happened. Thankfully, we encountered a different staff member. Her response was completely different. She listened to us, apologized, acknowledged our concern, and promptly moved us to a better room.
I want to specifically recognize that employee because her response demonstrated the kind of hospitality and professionalism we had hoped to receive from the beginning. I appreciated her taking our complaint seriously and resolving the immediate problem.
However, being moved to another room did not erase what happened during our first night or the uncomfortable experience at check-in.
Barcelona itself is a beautiful city, and I wanted very much to enjoy our time there. Unfortunately, during this trip I experienced several interactions—not only at the hotel, but also elsewhere in the city—that left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. I am not suggesting that my experiences represent everyone in Barcelona or Spain. I can only speak about what I personally experienced.
The hotel experience was particularly disappointing because a hotel should be a place where a guest feels safe, comfortable, and welcome.
When I pay to stay at a hotel, I am not asking for special treatment. I expect the same basic things that I believe every paying guest should receive: a clean and safe room, professional service, courtesy, and to be treated with dignity and respect.
After this experience, my husband and I decided that we do not plan to return to Hotel Constanza. We had even discussed returning to Barcelona, but my husband was very clear that he did not want us returning somewhere after seeing how uncomfortable some of these experiences made me feel.
For me, spending money on travel is also a choice about where I feel comfortable and valued as a customer. I would rather spend my money with hotels, restaurants, airlines, and other businesses where customers are treated professionally and made to feel that their business is appreciated.
I am sharing this review not to tell other travelers what conclusion they should reach, but to accurately document what happened to me so that others can make their own informed decision.
There were positive aspects—the second staff member responded appropriately, apologized, and gave us a better room, and I genuinely appreciated that. But considering the troubling first-night room conditions together with my uncomfortable check-in experience, this was not a hotel experience I would choose to repeat.
