A rare experience in 2026

Pension Roma is not your typical hotel—and that’s exactly the point. If you’re expecting polished luxury, look elsewhere. This is an old-school downtown Cairo hotel with character: creaky floors, a slightly intimidating elevator, and a mix of rooms—some with private baths, some without. But if you understand what you’re walking into, it’s part of the charm rather than a drawback.
What makes this place special (as an American) is the atmosphere and the people it attacks. Pension Roma seems to pull in travelers who are curious, thoughtful, and more sophisticated than the average tourist. You’ll also likely meet writers, backpackers, academics, and people who actually want to experience authentic Cairo.
The location is unbeatable with lively streets, local food, and zero of the overly commercial “tourist Egypt” feel. Yet inside it’s frozen in time and calm. The breakfast is simple and the staff are genuinely kind and helpful in a way that feels personal.

Beautiful pension in Cairo

Host conveniently located in the center of Cairo. We had the luxury of being 2 in triple and quadruple rooms so very spacious with private bathrooms. The establishment has the old-fashioned charm of a hercules poirot but we felt safe (2 women) with a team always taking care to solve the small problems we encountered. In 2025, the rooms are air-conditioned, at least ours and mosquito repellent plugs are provided. The windows were equipped with mosquito nets. Not a single mosquito tried its luck despite the 34 degrees in Cairo during this week.
Excellent value for money, we will come back for sure!

Rome in the heart of Cairo

The Pension Rome is one of the best hotels in the center of Cairo, 169 rue Mohamed Frédé, an old-fashioned architectural building, very clean, quiet and elegant building, its simple entrance, the hotel is located on the fourth and fifth floors of the building, there is an elegant wooden elevator with gold-plateau, braille reading, the fourth floor arrives and the elevator plays a beautiful tune...the hotel host opened the elevator door and greeted me with a smile and helped me carry my bags... Mrs. Adell, an Italian lady, very gentle
,the hotel owner and manager welcomes you
They speak Italian, French, Arabic, English, and other languages
24/7 reception
Room pick-up starts at 12:00 a midday
Mr. Ramsay and Mr. Chushan
They work with professionalism
The hotel has 39 rooms, repaired by the 38th room in the marble, a two-person room, an indoor, air-conditioned bathroom, and a grand pavilion overlooking the main street. Breakfast service in the fourth arrondissement from 7am to 11am, the dining room is so beautiful as if you are in a classic restaurant, the hall has a piano, Mr. Ibrahim Nadar and serves you breakfast in a professional way, the breakfast is a coffee pot, tea, milk, fresh kaiser, triangle cheese, shrimp and some fresh biscuits...I would have hoped the breakfast would be richer, if even more expensive, or if the hotel serves two types of classic, Egyptian breakfast, egg, sauce, zebad juice, arrow and fruit. Underneath the building is a folk cafe and a sandwich cart, the tea was as delicious as the sandwiches .
Living in Rome Italy and staying in the Pension Rome in the center of Cairo I felt totally at home
Thank you from whole heart
Good-bye next time

A very comfortable place with unbeatable room rates

If you’re willing to forego a private bathroom and A/C, there’s no way this place can be beat in terms bang for your buck/pound/euro, etc. You can easily pay double or more for something less well kept, where the cacophony that rises up from Cairo’s streets will rattle your nerves well into the night. This place is located on a somewhat relatively sedate (for Cairo) shopping street with plenty of places to eat nearby, as well as one of the city’s best pharmacies (that, unfortunately, I had to utilize), which is located just down the block. Additionally, it’s set back off the street so there are many quiet rooms on offer. Both of mine faced the quiet alleyway that lies outside the entrance.
One thing you won’t be for want of is space; the place has a huge dining area, a nice television room and spacious hallways. It’s charm, albeit somewhat faded, is reminiscent of the old pensions in Europe (replete with an open air, wrought iron elevator shaft). Because of this “open concept”, however, mozzies are free to float in and float up and down the floors. I bought a plug-in device which uses a product derived from chrysanthemums, which you slide into the device. They look similar to the memory card for a camera and are good for 8 hours. It seemed to keep them at bay.
I stayed in two rooms at different times and neither had A/C but the really high ceilings and fan did the trick for me (granted I wasn’t there during summer). The rooms also have a secondary ventilation system which turns on in the morning and goes off at 20:00. Essentially it is an exhaust fan located above the windows which draws air out of the room to increase circulation. Supposedly the pension has A/C rooms. I saw three rooms on two floors, none of which had it. Maybe if you specifically request one when you book you’ll be able to nab one.
The front desk and staff are truly 24 hours. They’re all fluent in English and other languages. There are no inquiries about your day’s plans and no offers of taxis, guides or tours. Their only interest is in providing their guests with a room and breakfast (which is bare bones but is better than no breakfast). If you would like those services, however, they’ll be happy to accommodate you.
An obvious downside is the lack of private bathrooms. Rooms come with sinks, which is nice, but everything else requires the communal bathroom. Fortunately they have two separate bathrooms. One consists of a toilet and sink only (for when the room that contains the shower is occupied). The only flaw I experienced with the shower was the heating system for the water. The propane powered heater either raged, which turned the water uncomfortably hot, or turned off, in which case the small tank quickly ran out of hot water. Not optimal for shower taking but it got the job done.
Be aware that the pension is set back in an alleyway and there is no sign indentifying it. When you see the “Redmonds” department store, you’re there.
One word of advice: if you can, get a room on the floor that has the lobby. The rooms there seemed noticeably less warm than the pension’s upper floor (which is the building’s top floor).

Wonderful hotel in the heart of Cairo

Wonderful place in the very center of the City. In a nice 1900 Italian style building, a soulful "pensione" furnished with taste with vintage furniture and kept with a lot of care by the same owner for 50 years and her staff, always available. Spacious rooms with high ceiling and hardwood floor, each one has its own decoration and spirit, some with balconies with columns. Many different configurations available, just ask: with AC or ceiling fan (we tried both, fan was enough even in summer), with or without shower and toilets in the the room (but the communal bathrooms are also very clean), all with at least a sink, single, double, double + single bed for families, on the street (vibrant city vibe) or on the back lane (very quiet). Very clean, comfortable and functional. Same for the communal spaces, large TV salon and dining room. Possible to order lunch and dinner too. Great vintage atmosphere, a lot of charm, an experience out of time
