A tranquil heaven and birdwatching paradise!

We spent 4 nights at the Awatawaa Ecolodge and loved every second of it.
First of all the owners and the team are super friendly and really go the extra mile to make the stay memorable.
The location is simply superb, far away from the crowds. The area is super safe, ideal for strolls along the beach or lagoon where we spotted flamingos, scarlet ibises, roseate spoonbills, terns and pelicans among many others.
The accommodation was comfortable with a neat outdoor shower, deck and hammock and good mattress. No AC needed as the fan above the bed does the job and the ocean is right there to cool off.
The food was excellent and even better than in more high-end accommodations. Varied, fresh, colorful and super tasty. The cook sources everything locally, even buying fish from the fishermen we saw fish in front of the lodge. We simply went with the cook’s recommendations and each meal was a surprise and a feast (definitely recommend going full board or at least half board here!).
The activities set up by the lodge were all very different and exciting. The visit to the Flamenco Reserve was great as we observed American Flamingos from up close with a local guide who explained all about the ins and outs. We also visited two indigenous villages that were very different from each other and during which we learnt a lot. In both cases we were the only tourists so it really feels more exclusive than from what is going on in Palomino.
We explored a river system as well and were blown away by the large variety of birdlife, and saw howler monkeys.
It is a true gem for anyone who wants an authentic stay, away from the crowds in a peaceful and unspoiled setting. Would definitely go back in a heartbeat!!

Off the Beaten track, it doesn't get any better!

We visited Awatawaa Ecolodge for 2 days during our tour of Colombia. This is a location Off the Beaten track. A location that is not visited by mass tourism, and that are not in the standard booklets. Paula, her husband and staff embrace you in their little paradise, which is located directly on a white bounty stand and on the other side on a lagoon with freshwater that continues connected to the beautiful mountains at the back of the Sierra Nevada. The wooden bungalows have a private bathroom, fans, mosquito net etcetera. No Aircon no waste, just being at one with nature. Because they are directly on the beach you can hear the sea and feel the wind as a cooling through the wooden walls. The food and drink is excellent and especially local dishes prepared with fresh fish, seafood etcetera will make you enjoy every time. Let Paula organize the activities with the locals, visit the large population of flamingos, join the campfire on the beach and then during your stay you really relax, just outside the rushed world. Really unique!!

Really beautiful secluded spot on the beach with a lovely staff, not to mention cute beach puppies! The beach was the best for swimming we encountered on our road trip, and the bird watching tower looking into the nature reserve was really cool. The bungalow with an outdoor shower was lovely. We were here for only one night, but wish we had been able to stay longer, and hope to be back soon! Quick note about google maps is that it doesn't think you can drive all the way there, but the road does continue and you can drive right to the front of the property.

Rest and adventure in the best beaches in La Guajira, Colombia

What a lovely and unique place to go ! Adventure, beautiful beaches, pretty bungalows, thou a rough sea.
Very nice employees and her owner is always present and willing to solve any situation.

Relaxing Cabins by the sea

A great place for a calm and relaxing retreat!
Very rustic boutique hotel with very helpful and friendly staff!
The cabins are all very close to the beach and the ocean!
It´s centently an unique expirience by the coast of Colombia!
I would totally recomend with you wanna relax and get away from the buzz
