Okay.
The Shangri La Hotel in Lhasa is a house that certainly has potential for a luxury hotel, but does not exploit it. It has well furnished rooms, some with breathtaking views of Potala Palace. However, the rooms, like the entire hotel, urgently need a refreshment. What is definitely missing for a luxury hotel is a corresponding atmosphere. The hotel is particularly frequented by local groups. We had booked a room with access to the Club Lounge, but this is not in operation at all. Instead, Club guests are offered a HighTea in the afternoon and a buffet in the evening in the main restaurant, in addition to the mandatory breakfast. The quality of the food is average. Atmosphere in the restaurant rather like in a canteen. Matching this, a creepy canteen truck is permanently cleared between the tables, so that no dignified atmosphere can arise. A few hotel employees speak English. The majority of the staff is striving, but fits well with the guest structure of less demanding group travelers. Although there is a hotel's own Wi-Fi, which unfortunately did not work during our entire stay. Probably the Shangri La in Lhasa was planned as a luxury hotel, but could not realize this claim and is now becoming more and more a mid-range hotel. Honestly, this also corresponds to the price level. You certainly can't expect more if you pay only 200 € for a room with a great view of the Potala including breakfast, HighTea and dinner.

Had a wonderful stay at Shangri-La Lhasa Hotel. The hotel offers excellent amenities, beautiful rooms, great hospitality, and very good service overall. The staff were extremely courteous and always ready to help.
A special thanks to Mr. Cooper from the Front Desk for his outstanding service and support throughout our stay. He was very professional, helpful, and made our experience even more comfortable and memorable.

A great base when visiting Lhasa
I spent 4 nights here recently. I've stayed at several Shangri-La properties in China, and I've been very happy with all of them. This location is quite new, very modern and it has interesting architectural touches to reflect the local culture.
My room was very comfortable. An oxygen generator came as standard, although I didn't use it. There's also a very comfortable Oxygen Lounge on the first floor for anyone who needs a boost to adjust to the 12,000-foot altitude.
Staff was great, very efficient and helpful. The breakfast and dinner buffets are the only dining choices, and they were very good. The large bar was closed - I don't know if that was permanent or temporary. And if you want some coffee early in the morning before the restaurant opens, check out the Coffee Robot, it's a hoot.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL SHANGRI-LA
If you are looking for an outstanding 5 -star experience, you will be disappointed. Yes, the hotel is older, and in need of refurbishment. Many areas are showing some age, and there is a heaviness to the decor that could be modernized. I was surprised that my room DID NOT have a bathtub, as I have never encountered a bathless bathroom in a 5-star product. The hotel is not in keeping with the average Shangri-la, but it represents the feel of Lhasa as Lhasa is not a metropolis city.
I found the food, and service to be professional, the response to any request timely, and the atmosphere perfect for Lhasa. There are some English-speaking personnel, but communication was not hindered by this, as everyone I encountered was pleasant and went out of their way to assist.
The caveat of this diminished product is that it is not as expensive in many areas. The Spa services were much less as well as the Spa merchandise. Yes, there is still the overpriced hotel shop that sells items you will find much cheaper elsewhere, but it gives you an opportunity to review pricing in advance. There is a modest gym, and all other outlets were 'ok' as well.
I would definitely return to this Hotel if in Lhasa with the understanding that the hotel reflects the area and is not a sparkling representative of Shangri-la. It feels like an old special organic hotel that pampers you true to the spirit of Tibet.

Great hotel in Lhasa
We stayed three nights during our tour of Tibet and we enjoyed it very much. The lobby is sumptuous... in a mixture of modern Tibetan style! Very large room with a comfortable living room corner... very used when we returned in the afternoon after a day at 3600 m!! Modern and design bathroom, very functional.
The restaurant for breakfast and buffet dinner in the evening is well furnished, pleasant and with a good offer of mainly Chinese but also Western dishes. As in all the hotels visited in these 15 days between Sichuan and Tibet, attention to allergies is non-existent. My coeliac wife unfortunately went on a rather aggressive unwanted diet! Then with goodwill they can cook you at least one fried rice & vegetables apart, but no further than that. As everyone has pointed out English is practically not spoken and this makes everything much more complex.
In any case, I repeat, we enjoyed it and recommend it.
