Wonderful surprise!

We did not expect too much from La Serena as it is not a big hub for tourism, but Balmaceda was one of the nicest hostels of our 4 month trip across south america! more like a hotel than a hostel. The staff was all very friendly and welcoming.

Very rude manager!

I really wanted to write a good review about this place and on a whole it was a good place to stay (especially in a town where there is nothing to do!)
The young man on reception was really helpful and spoke excellent English! The room was nice and had a TV with its own bathroom. The wifi was excellent which was a bonus! The kitchen and breakfast area was also really nice and the breakfast was decent.
...However, for most travellers La Serena is just a stop off point on the way up North! Therefore, it is likely a lot of people will be waiting around in the day to get a night bus. We thought, as is the case in most hostels, we would be allowed to leave our bags there while we waited for our bus. After trying to kill time as best we could, we stopped at the hostel to quickly use the bathroom at 5pm.The young man on reception then came to ask us if it was our bags in reception as the manager said we must take them immediately! We explained our bus was not till 9 and could we keep them there a little longer but the manager said we had to take them straight away! The young man was very apologetic and I think he could see his manager was being unreasonable. I really don't see what difference it would of made to the manager for our bags to be there a little longer or at least till reception closed! Perhaps he could have spoke to us himself instead of getting the receptionist to do it for him!
Let down after a nice stay!

Wonderful

Had a beautiful stay here.
Although currently being renovated this didn't deter our stay. Lovely rooms and very friendly and attentive staff.
Close to the central shopping and entertain area and only a couple of blocks from the bus terminal.
Would stay here again.

A good choice

This hostel is beautifully presented - we had a double room at the back of the complex that was an ideal size, had an en suite, locked cupboard (a huge bonus), and cable TV.
The location is an easy walking distance to town and the bus station.
Breakfast was help-yourself and was simple but good and there was a small kitchenette (we didn't have a chance to use it but it looked nice).
Wifi was a bit hit and miss, but we've been finding that everywhere.
The only thing that lets them down, for us anyway, was the disorganisation at reception. There did not seem to be good systems of communication between the staff members, which is problematic when you've arranged something (like bag storage which you have to pay for if you want it stored after 2pm) and then no one else seems to know about it...but otherwise this is a lovely place to stay.

Good place for a couple

We stayed here for a few nights and it was overall good. It is not as social as a hostel, which may be annoying if you are travelling alone. The staff/owners are very nice and helpful, the rooms are clean and spacious. Breakfast comes in an already prepared box, and it is coffee, juice, sandwich and small pack of cookies. If you are visiting in winter beware that it gets very cold in the eating area/kitchen as it is open. A few heaters would be great. There is an outside area which is really nice, with tables and chairs to relax under the sun.
