Best hostel on the East Coast :)
I stayed here solo, and probably one of the best Hosels I have stayed in. Everyone who works at Cool Bananas makes you feel so welcome and involved. I had such a good time. You must go on the plane ride, you actually get to have a go at flying! Amazing experience and worth every penny. The team were amazing, I wish I could have stayed longer! The hostel itself was clean, welcoming and felt homely. Not to mention the super cute dog that lives here :)
Definitely worth staying here in Agnes Water.

Terrible hostel and aggressive owner
Never in my life have I felt so unsafe or disrespected at a hostel. This was not simply “unprofessional” — it was genuinely disturbing. It’s safer to sleep un the streets than under this perverted regime of disgustingness. We were physically assaulted by one of the workers and received hurls of verbal abuse from the owner. The precedent he set was completely inappropriate - he is not a 20 year old backpacker, there is no excuse for such repugnant behaviour.
From the moment we arrived The owner was intoxicated for the majority of our stay, repeatedly minimising and dismissing serious concerns, including medical needs. Basic professionalism was entirely absent.
We paid for a service that explicitly included pick-up and drop-off. An hour before departure, we were told the bus “wasn’t working.” We later discovered this was because the staff — including the owner — were drunk. As a result, we were left scrambling late at night, at 11pm, anxious about missing a bus we had already booked and paid for.
What crossed the line from incompetence into something far more serious was the behaviour of one staff member. A female guest was slapped hard on her backside without consent, causing immediate pain. When confronted, he dismissed it as “a lucky whip.” Instead of apologising, he laughed and attempted to justify it by saying, “Well she threw some salt on me,” as though that somehow excused physical assault. It was humiliating, inappropriate, and deeply unsettling.
There were repeated comments and actions that made us feel uncomfortable and unsafe. However, with nowhere else to stay at that hour and transport already booked, we felt pressured into silence — something I suspect many other guests have experienced.
As we were leaving, the situation escalated further. Ten minutes before our bus was due, after we had all been promised a transfer and asked repeatedly , i beeped the horn- a friendly gesture mirroring the immature precedent set by the owner. In response , the owner threatened to leave us in the dark and verbally abused us, repeatedly calling me a “f******g b****h” while reminding me I was “staying in his house.” He swore more than the amount of times we smiled during our stay, a mouth like a sewer and the agression of a wild animal. I was not a guest in someone’s home — I was a paying customer who had paid for services that were not delivered.
When we beeped the horn of the van (which was late due to staff intoxication), we were met with further verbal aggression instead of accountability.
The “chilled vibe” marketed here is simply a mask for immaturity, aggression, and a complete lack of boundaries. There is a difference between relaxed and reckless — and this place operates firmly in the latter category.
Given how proudly they reference their negative reviews, I fully expect a dismissive or fabricated response to this one. Regardless, I am writing this to warn others: if you value safety, professionalism, and basic respect, do not stay here.

Could upgrade
The staff was fine. Value for money for those paying $80 a bunk? Not great. Couches are all crappy. Wooden seats run down. Bus not used for guests. Get a spa or pool and upgrade outdoor area. Fire pit not used. Limited parking. Agnes waters has little there and gets overcrowded and overpriced.

No ´safe´space for guests!
The hostel is very simple. There are only very thin blankets and in the winter time they do not have any good ressources to protect their guests. The atmosphere seems relaxed at first, but I observed that the social each other behaviour is very strange. You fit in or not. I perceived unfair behaviour to guests who were sick. Of course you get sick, if you have no warm room, neither a good blanket in the winter. It is not the guests fault. When I was around I heard that one person (who was sick, but already getting better) was getting a warning that the guests should not come too close to that person or they will kick this person out. As if one person can control who wants to talk with it... absolutly not okay.
The hostel has a cooperation with Gnarly Surf Tours which is nice. I took a surf lesson and was asked to do it another day, because I was the only participant. If they do not want to give surf lessons to only one participant, they should mention a minimum of participants. Anyway, I kept my schedule and had fun in my way. It would have been more fun, if the surf teacher would not have been so moody and bored. Also, I wished the surf teacher who has a lifetime of experience with this place and surfing would have checked the conditions for surfing in advance and honestly told me that it was a bad day for surfing.
Honestly, I do not understand their attitude and feel, they just were after my money. All this made me very uncomfortable staying there. Luckily Agnes Water offers a few escape possibilities and I stayed only 2 nights.
I hope, this hostel will take some deep self-reflections and improve their repertoire and attitude.

very good hostel and activities!
So nice ! Did the adventure pack so i had a flight, surf and speed boat and had the best time! The hostel is very nice and feels like a big family, with a great kitchen and quiet rooms. The community space is very nice and there’s a lot of activities to do with the hostels … very good stop on your way to the north :)
