Very Disappointed
We discovered once we got there that things weren’t as advertised. Upon arriving, Maureen (sister) mentioned how much we were looking forward to getting into the pool after our flight and was told by Vee (owner) that we would only be permitted to use the pool through Saturday, that people were checking in that Sunday and the pool would be for their use. When Maureen asked why, she was told that the pool is actually for those staying in their largest apartment but since no one had it rented until that Sunday, we were permitted to use the pool through Saturday. I have since gone through their booking.com posting (how Maureen found the listing) with a fine tooth comb and NO WHERE does it say in their posting that the pool was specifically for use by those renting the larger accommodation; had that been stated she would never have rented that property for us. This not being stated in their listing is incredibly deceptive. Another issue, no flushing toilet paper. Don’t get me wrong, yes, depending on the island and location, this is always possible but again, it wasn’t disclosed in the listing and for Maureen, had it been disclosed, this is another reason she wouldn’t have booked Casa Chiquito. When we were down to one roll of toilet paper Maureen mentioned this to Vee and she was told that the ‘store is around the corner’. Now, the store was around the corner and the prices weren’t bad BUT, in the listing, toilet paper is specifically listed as being provided.
We were in the one bedroom. The air conditioning was substandard. When Maureen brought this to Vee’s attention she said she found it to be perfectly cool. We are from the Northeast (USA) and the level of heat and humidity being way more intense in Aruba than what we’re used to made the air insufficient for us. In fairness, it was lovely in the bedroom, where the air conditioner was located but the air didn’t flow into the living area and, although there was a fan provided, the cord was too short to put the fan in front of the bedroom to blow the cool air into the living area or the bathroom. The bathroom was so hot that whether using the the toilet (water closet, complete with door) or showering or using the sink, it was very hot. I usually ‘run cold’ and I’d be sweating in the living room and bathroom, even after a shower. Also, the air would be turned off when we went out so we’d come back to a very hot apartment. And my sister has some breathing issues due to her being a lung cancer survivor so she was having difficulty breathing unless she was in the bedroom.
They have cars you can rent. The rates are great, the cars are not. We befriended a family that was there during most of our first week and they invited us to go out with them every day and they had rented one of the cars. They mentioned that a tire was low on air to the owner’s and they were told to just take it to get air. Also, they were concerned about a tire that was looking a bit bald and were told that if they got a flat to just put a new tire on with no mention of being reimbursed.
The biggest upset was the pool since it wasn’t disclosed that we wouldn’t have full time access. Due to when the new renter’s were arriving we were only going to be able to use the pool 4 days out of a 14 day stay, something that, had we known, we never would’ve rented this property. Obviously the lack of air and how it impacted Maureen was a huge issue BUT not one that we could have known since we didn’t see anything in the booking.com reviews regarding that, the pool issue, the toilet/toilet paper issue, any issues at all, in fact.
When Maureen told Vee that we were going to look for another place for our second week and check out and the reasons why, Vee told her that she was sure that the people who had just checked in and had sole access to the pool may let us use it, like it was no big deal, as though that made it ok. She didn’t acknowledge or apologize for the fact that this wasn’t fully disclosed in their booking.com listing. She then literally accused us of wanting to leave because our friends (the family we met there and were hanging out with) were checking out and heading home so that was why we wanted to check out, completely disregarding the pool and the air situation although Maureen made it very clear that these were the reasons why we were looking to relocate.
The good news, we found a place, in the Eagle Beach area, a block away from the beach, perfectly between Oranjestad and Palm Beach if you want to explore those areas. Because of the proximity to the beach we always had an amazing ocean breeze, so refreshing and we had a wonderful pool with both sunny and shaded areas that we could use, 24/7 and air conditioning that was incredibly strong, just what we needed and Maureen felt great once we got there and for the rest of our stay When Maureen told Vee, Vee’s response was that that we were leaving ‘authentic’ Aruba for ‘plastic’ Aruba. She also refused to return Maureen’s money for the second week which is pretty crappy when the listing didn’t give us the truth and because we made Vee aware of how sick Maureen felt due to the lack of air conditioning. Booking.com reached out to Vee and Mark more than once and they still refused to return the money. I’m actually very disappointed with booking.com for not returning her money directly and then fighting Vee and Mark for the money since Maureen booked this property based on a listing that wasn’t accurate.
If you don’t mind not having access to a pool for your total stay, not being near too many things, not being able to flush your toilet paper, not having access to the pool table that they advertise (unless you book the largest apartment, just like the pool) then Casa Chiquito could be for you but if you want transparency and honesty in a listing and to have a pool to use as much as you want when on Vacation on an island, don’t rent here. Also, when you look at the pictures included in their listing, you should know that the majority of the pictures are from the largest apartment, including the pool table which is in that apartment, only for the use of those staying there, not for all guests as the listing states.
