Wonderful stay with outstanding staff and a truly memorable ending
We stayed at Merlin Bay Villas over the Christmas and New Year period and overall had a really lovely experience.
The location is fantastic — perfectly situated between Holetown and Speightstown, making it easy to explore both while still feeling peaceful and tucked away. The pool area is beautiful and was a real highlight for relaxing during the day.
The beach directly in front of the villas is a little rocky, but it’s incredibly secluded, tranquil, and felt very private — perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the sound of the sea.
We stayed in two villas, Gingerbread and FireFly. Both were great, but Gingerbread was definitely our favourite — full of charm, space, and character. Whilst the villas could do with a little spruce up in places, they are absolutely gorgeous and full of Caribbean character, and we would happily stay again.
Unfortunately, during our stay we experienced significant issues with water pressure and then a complete loss of water affecting showers, toilets, and the kitchen. This was no fault of Merlin Bay or the staff but a Barbados Water Authority issue with burst mains causing issues.
We were without water for three days going into a fourth, which was extremely challenging and very nearly turned into a holiday from hell.
However — and this is where Merlin Bay truly shone — Tracey and the owners were absolutely amazing. Communication was excellent throughout, with regular updates and genuine care shown at every stage bringing us drinking water and looking for solutions. When it became clear the issue couldn’t be resolved quickly, they went above and beyond by opening up the owners’ private villa for us to stay in for the remainder of our holiday. It was completely out of this world and turned a very stressful situation into something unforgettable.
Every single member of staff deserves recognition — from Tracey, to the housekeepers, security, and grounds staff. Every interaction was warm, friendly, and professional, and we will genuinely miss them all.
Despite the challenges, we left with very fond memories thanks to the incredible people who work here. Merlin Bay Villas is a beautiful, peaceful place, and the care shown by the team truly sets it apart.
We would happily return & would encourage people to go visit Merlin Bay.

Not recommended
We rented the Ocean view unit at Merlin Bay through Luxury Villas. This villa was anything but luxurious. It is old and not well maintained. Despite being advertised as an air-conditioned unit, the AC was only functional in the bedrooms. The AC in the living room did not function. So the main living areas, the kitchen and bathrooms were uncomfortably humid and warm. The bathtubs were disgusting, completely scaled and attracted cockroaches!
During rain fall, water leaked in the staircase and master bathroom. The dishwasher malfunctioned and leaked large amount of water of the floor. The smoke detector was deactivated.
And to top it all, during 4 out of 7 days, we experienced prolonged periods of complete water shut down without warning. Other units affected were compensated. But despite multiple attempts, Luxury villa refused any form of compensation. We were only reimbursed half the price of the AC unit we had to buy to replace the broken one in the living room.
Trying to end on a positive note, the location is unbeatable. The ocean is turquoise and warm. A special mention for Kimberley and Jayden who went out of their way to make our stay more enjoyable. Despite this, we would never return to Merlin Bay and we would advise anyone we know against staying there.

Holiday of a Lifetime
We have just returned from an amazing 10-day stay at the beautiful Gingerbread Villa within the Merlin Bay Complex, and we felt compelled to write a five-star review. Each morning, we were greeted by breathtaking views overlooking the pool and the Caribbean Sea beyond. The staff was incredibly attentive and caring; nothing was too much trouble for Tracey and the Merlin Bay team.
The villa complex is secured with gates, providing ample safe parking space, which was beneficial for guests who had rented cars. The surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained. Watching the sunset from the lovely patio that overlooks the sea truly elevated the experience of enjoying a sundowner. Additionally, wandering down the steps to the beach below the villas was a magical way to start the day. One day, a friendly local green monkey even passed by with her baby, stealing mangoes from the trees that surround the complex.
The central pool is well-kept, and the landscaping provides each villa with additional privacy. The plunge pool in each villa is a great addition, and with plenty of sun loungers and chairs available, the complex never felt crowded.
The villas are beautifully appointed in a relaxed style, making our Barbadian base a comfortable place to unwind in the evenings if we didn’t feel like going out.
Merlin Bay villas are conveniently located along the road that connects Speightstown and Holetown, with frequent buses passing by.
Barbados is a truly magical island. We rented a car for three days and enjoyed exploring the island, especially the wilder, Atlantic-facing East Coast. Hunte’s Gardens was breathtaking, as were the Flower Caves. However, the highlight of our trip was a day spent diving to see the coral reefs and turtles, while being accompanied by flying fish swimming alongside our boat.
For the most magical of holidays, I cannot recommend Merlin Bay highly enough.

Merlin Bay Villas are fabulous with spectucular pool and gardens
Merlin Bay Villas are fabulous. The pool is spectacular, absolutely huge and very deep and surrounded by gorgeous gardens, with a stunning view of the sea. Supposedly the most beautiful pool and gardens in Barbados which we can believe. The villas are spacious and very comfortable, two huge bedrooms with bathrooms at the front, and one large bedroom with bathroom at the back. We stayed in Gingerbread, which had a small private "foot" pool on the main terrace level, and large private plunge pool on lower level. The staff are so attentive and friendly, the villa is thoroughly cleaned every day, with fresh beach towels daily, and clean sheets and bath towels every two days. They even did our personal laundry. Excellent security, with locked gates to enter property or access the beach, and security guard day and night. One important note is that the beach is narrow and stony and there are rocks along much of the beach so important to bring water shoes to get into the sea to swim. We had a chef (this is extra but well worth it) which made the holiday even more relaxing.

Ocean View at Merlin Bay is the perfect location for a relaxing family holiday in fantastic Barbados
Just returned from a family holiday with friends. It was our first time in Barbados, and had a wonderful time. Can definitely recommend Merlin Bay on the west coast between Holetown and Speightstown. The local buses stop outside the Villas and provide a short and entertaining journey to the 2 towns for shopping and eating. Numerous excellent local beach bars and restaurants. Our housekeeper was fantastic and couldnt have been more helpful in looking after us. The manager was very good at helping us arrange trips and couldnt have been more attentive. We ate in, or went to the local restaurants, but on one night the Merlin Bay chef cooked a fantastic meal of local fish for a special Valentine's Day dinner.
There are 8 villas at Merlin Bay, and we stayed in Ocean View, which was perfect for our family. 3 large en suite bedrooms with open and airy lounge and dining area. AC worked well and kept us cool indoors. Exclusive plunge pool and patio, giving access to the large communal pool and steps down to the beach. We will definitely return.
